A golden retriever was shot dead by a police officer in Ohio and dramatic bodycam footage caught the controversial moment - as cries for the cop's firing from the bereaved family grow.
The July 2 shooting footage showed Lorain police officer Elliott Palmer shooting three-and-a-half-year-old Dixie and then leaving the dog dying on the sidewalk.
The dog ran up to the responding officer at a scene, and while it did not appear aggressive it was coming towards Palmer when he opened fire.
That sparked outrage from people who witnessed the killing of the dog and now family and social-media posters are calling for the officer's job.
'After she was shot one time in the street, he should have just let it go and let us get the dog and take her where she needed to be treated,' The dog's owner, Tammie Kerns, said to 3News, in tears.
'But he didn't do that. She was crawling — useless, helpless — in the street. He continued shooting her. She was trying to come to safety, and he just kept shooting her three more times after the first time,' she added.
The Lorain Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident, assuring transparency and a thorough examination of the circumstances.
It's unclear if Palmer remains on-duty during the investigation. Dailymail.com has reached out to the Lorain Police Department but officials did not respond in time for this report.
The Kerns family has threatened legal action against the police department, demanding justice for Dixie.

Lorain police officer Elliott Palmer IS A COWARD!!
Lorain police officer Elliott Palmer should be removed from duty and FOREVER PROHIBITED from EVER coming near a dog or a gun for the remainder of his miserable cowardly life.
LEOs wonder why the public has a high level of animosity, mistrust and distain against them. Shooting dogs ain’t helping your cause.
The dog is running away and the POS shoots her again. Just another chickensh*t jack-booted thug with a badge.
I take your point. Dogs shouldn’t be running loose on the streets.
And cops should have much better training on when a dog is a threat.
cops....it figures....a male cop...a big ol strong male cop can’t handle a friendly dog getting close to him.....
He just wanted to put another dog sticker on his cop car. Police are completely out of control in this country.
we've all watched too much Dragnet....guys that were straight forward and honest to the core....
If a cop is triggered by a golden retriever, he shouldn’t be a cop. Period.
You all need to look more closely at the video. The dog that was shot was not the dog wagging its tail. It was the dog that the woman was trying to restrain who finally got free and then went straight for the officer. Not sure is was necessary to shoot the dog but let’s give police officers the benefit of the doubt.
The America we grew up in is gone and not coming back. An unexpected benefit of moving overseas is: most police around the world are normal and do not robo-shoot. Leaving the Divided States, the danger of government execution of you, your loved ones, and your dog, being one phone call away, is lifted off your shoulders.
Yes...sad but justified.
Mama always said the police are like a box of chocolates....they’ll kill your dog.
Gannon and Friday were sanctimonious, rule-happy tools in their own right.
Watch it again...you’ve got it wrong.

Easier to see what happened in this video link.
Ditto that...
Please, I love dogs, but I am not naive or stupid enough to think that all people are comfortable or familiar with dogs and their behaviors.
Some dog owners forget that not everyone is comfortable or familiar with dogs. Some are very ignorant and disrespectful of others.
Any animal running at a person, regardless of what animal it is, can be perceived as a threat.. fight of flight is a natural response, and just because you are familiar and comfortable with a particular animal running at you, doesn’t mean everyone else on the planet will have the same reaction.
It is clear to anyone familiar with dog behavior that this dog wasn’t charging at this man in aggression. However, to someone who is not familiar with it, claiming they should just “KNOW” the animal running at them is not being aggressive and not respond with the fight of flight reflex is a ludicrous expectation.
End of the day a dog is the owners responsibility, there are reasons there are leash laws. I sympathize with the owner, but I am not going to publicly hang a man because he responded to a fight or flight scenario with fight.
Yep, it's the 90% of "good cops" turning a blind eye to the 10% that are violent, corrupt or mentally unfit, that are destroying America's trust in law enforcement. Their "blue wall" and code of silence allow the cancer to spread. 10% bad is being generous, and it's getting worse. Meanwhile we are militarizing these forces, and police training is aggressively dehumanizing the population they are supposed to "protect and serve".
Agreed, see post 57
Is such a person competent to be a police officer, particularly in suburban America?
