I’m trying to understand how any civilization that’s managed to traverse interstellar space to get here would see any reason to stay, given our obviously ancient technology and the fact that society has not advanced enough to eliminate leftists.

With the advanced technology they would have to have — if they had wanted to kill us they would have already done it..

This is an important point. If any Earth govt had this technology they would use it. There is no time where a new superior technology was not used.

Why do you assume that such harm would have to be defined by killing us or otherwise turning us into "toast"?
Think out of the box a little bit.
What if they are not physical beings like us and to enter our reality and exist on our planet they need to inhabit our bodies and minds in a kind of symbiosis with humans (similar to demonic possession)?
