They made a grape escape.
Brazen thieves broke into a Los Angeles liquor store and stole roughly $700,000 worth of rare wines, according to the store owner.
The heist happened around 1 a.m. on Saturday morning, Nazmul Haque Helal, the owner of Lincoln Fine Wines, told KTLA.

How can anybody run a business in Los Angeles? Insurance must be through the roof.

Couldn’t pay me to live in California.

How did they arrive at $700K so quickly? I don’t doubt the wine was stolen, but I’ll bet the value has been inflated considerably.

Insurance. You may be on to something there. Rumpole had a case like that once. The owner of the store "fenced" his wine and had one of the Malloys in the frame for heisting it, the Malloy-in-question's wife participating in the frame up, leaving clews all over their flat to incriminate him, whilst she intended to run off with the wine merchant once old Malloy was in the gaol.

“Simple math” you never tell insurance that they stole the rot gut.

"Brazen thieves broke into a Los Angeles liquor

Stop with the puns! Sure, it sounds like I’m wining. But I can’t bottle up my feelings here. So no, I won’t put a cork in it.

Hmm. I'll bet the clews were meant to throw Rumpole off the trail! :-)

No the clews were there to lead the Metropolitan Police down the primrose path, but fortunately for the villain Malloy, and unfortunately for Mrs. Malloy and the wine merchant, Rumpole saw right through their designs.

The insurance company will want to see receipts and do their own inventory, or at least have the opportunity to do so if they have any suspicions. Unfortunately wine is fungible, and the whole lot is probably on a freighter bound for Shanghai by now.

I know that area. It is in Venice. But it has been some 45 years since I lived in California.
