THE REBEL MOVEMENTS: The Invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania; Exaggerated Stories Regarding Lee’s Strength (6/26/1863)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 6/26/1863

A letter received in New-York, dated Washington, Wednesday afternoon, says:

"Twenty thousand of BRAGG's army are at Richmond, doing garrison duty."

The letter also says:

"Gen. LEE has his whole army, 125,000, in the immediate vicinity of the Potomac. BRAGG is to take care of Richmond, while LEE takes care of Washington. Richmond was reinforced on the 19th inst."

Special Dispatch to the New-York Times.

WASHINGTON. Thursday. June 25.

Your special correspondent, Mr. F. HENRY, sends the following to this Bureau:

FREDERICK, Thursday, June 25 -- 9 A.M.

That the rebels are on this side of the Potomac in strong force is now an established fact. The mystery which for the past two weeks has enshrouded the movements of the rebel army in the Shenandoah Valley is at last dispelled, and LEE's real intentions are unmasked. There is no doubt that more than one-half of LEE's army is now on Maryland soil, and advancing in three columns into Pennsylvania. Each advancing column is followed by immense wagon trains, most of which are empty. Gen. EWELL commands in person the centre advancing column. He is unable to walk without crutches. He leads his command in a carriage.

Extra BILLY SMITH, reported in the Richmond papers as being killed at Winchester, is in command of a brigade in EWELL's corps. He was seen, in full feather, in Hagerstown yesterday.

The wagon train watch accommodated the centre column numbered several hundred wagons, the majority of which were marked U.S., with the names of the divisions or brigades from which they were captured.

The rebel division which crossed at Hancock, and is now operating in the vicinity of Mercersburgh, is commanded by BRADLEY T. JOHNSON, the renegade Marylander.

The rebels crossed the river at four points, viz.: Williamsport, Hancock, Shepardstown, and Antietam Ford.

Interesting story of the poor Sioux trapper who was gone for a year, only to come home with his white partner....to find out there was a war going on; his kid was dead; and his wife remarried thinking he was dead too.

And his white partner went downriver with all of their furs.

Talk about a not so good day.

Your posts remind me of the song by Paul Simon: One Trick Pony. He's a one trick pony, one trick is all that horse can do.
