The Upper Atmosphere Is Cooling, Prompting New Climate Concerns
Yale Environment 360 ^ | 18/5/23 | Fred Pearce

There is a paradox at the heart of our changing climate. While the blanket of air close to the Earth’s surface is warming, most of the atmosphere above is becoming dramatically colder. The same gases that are warming the bottom few miles of air are cooling the much greater expanses above that stretch to the edge of space.

This paradox has long been predicted by climate modelers, but only recently quantified in detail by satellite sensors. The new findings are providing a definitive confirmation on one important issue, but at the same time raising other questions.

The good news for climate scientists is that the data on cooling aloft do more than confirm the accuracy of the models that identify surface warming as human-made. A new study published this month in the journal PNAS by veteran climate modeler Ben Santer of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution found that it increased the strength of the “signal” of the human fingerprint of climate change fivefold, by reducing the interference “noise” from background natural variability. Sander says the finding is “incontrovertible.”

Do we have to mask up again? Or was that another catastrophe? I forget

Hurricanes are nature’s heat exchangers.

At the end of the day Earths environment is primarily governed by 4 things - incident solar radiation ( the dominant factor) , the amount of solar radiation reflected back into space, amount of solar radiation absorbed by the earth and the amount of energy radiated back into space.

Incoming solar energy is dominant in determining temperature.

Try this experiment.

Take a thermometer and go outside at 6am t 9am, 12 noon, 3 pm, 6pm , 9pm, 12 am, 3 am and back to 6am to measure the temperature.

This will kind of give you an idea of how much and how fast changes in solar energy effect the environment.

I can't believe how much BS the global warming fraudsters get away with.

Blizzards? Climate change. Heat wave? Climate change. Hurricanes? Climate change. No hurricanes? Climate change.

Ain't it great to be an Environmental Wacko, as Rush called them? Heads I win; tails you lose.

Something changed, we need a new model to confirm humans are still at fault.

Most of the satellites that have supplied information from the upper atmosphere over the past three decades — delivering his and others’ forecasts of cooling and contraction — are reaching the ends of their lives. Of six NASA satellites on the case, one failed in December, another was decommissioned in March, and three more are set to shut down soon. “There is as yet no new mission planned or in development,” he says.

Mlynczak is hoping to reboot interest in monitoring with a special session that he is organizing at the American Geophysical Union this fall to discuss the upper atmosphere as “the next frontier in climate change.” Without continued monitoring, the fear is we could soon be returning to the days of the ignorosphere.

ignorosphere, such a scientific term. Also send more money so we can get more fake data.

...that the data on cooling aloft do more than confirm the accuracy of the models that identify surface warming as human-made.

That would make them correct for THE VERY FIRST TIME! Partay like it's 1999.

here is a better explanation. historically temperature measurements were taken and recorded at remote locations that were not urban. within the last 50 years these areas have been urbanized and because of asphalt and concrete near the areas being measured the same measurements are showing an increase because of radiant heat in the immediate vicinity. get rid of all urban measurements from the model and there is no change in temp measurement average.

I love the real study of climate. Unfortunately, scientists that study climate don’t talk about this stuff openly out of fear that the universities they work at and other scientists that are getting grants on the premise that climate change is happening, Will have them fired.

i think the colder layer is compressing the lower layer and that has to be a natural phenomenon.

Well it only makes sense that if your coffee mug get hot that it cools the air around it… like your hands!

Does Fauci control the environmental groups in the UN too?

Wait - so they’re now calling the CO2 an insulator?! That means it should be stopping the heat from the sun getting TO us as much as it stops the heat getting OUT!

That’s BS

Urban heat zones I can see keeping warm air in pockets. But not on a planetary scale. And the scales these beggars use vs the language is so propagandist. “ SCORCHING waarming of .00000004 degrees over two hundred years.”

In regards to a new cooling trend Russians have been predicting cooling (which will kill) while the beggars keep getting money proclaiming doom from warming (which is beneficial).

“...within the last 50 years these areas have been urbanized.”

There was (is?) a website that had photos of the weather stations over the years showing what you described. A station out in a field is now surrounded by an expanded parking lot.

At our local zoo the weather station was out in the field behind the environmental studies building. They tore the old building down and put in a huge new eco-friendly showcase building. Now the weather station sits 10 feet from the huge air-conditioners sitting on crushed rock.

Everything I needed to know about climate change I learned from Oregon’s governor firing the state climatologist for disagreeing with him about climate change.
