Special Dispatches to the New-York Times.
HARRISBURGH, Penn., Wednesday, June 24.
The rebel cavalry advanced to Shippensburgh this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Telegraphic communication was suspended at that place. The operator retired to Newville, and at last accounts was at Graysonville, six miles above Carlisle and twenty-four from Harrisburgh.
At the present moment the Eighth and Seventy-first New-York are at Carlisle. Gen. KNIPE is at that point. A train of cars with the engine fully steamed is in readiness to convey the troops hither in case the emergency should demand it. Gen. KNIPE has telegraphed to Gen. COUCH that he wants to make a stand at Carlisle, but in order to do it he must have reinforcements. As yet the reinforcements here have not been sent out, and in all probability the troops will be ordered to fall back to Harrisburgh.
A deserter who came in this afternoon, reports that EWELL's entire division is advancing this way. It comprises twelve thousand men, beside a heavy force of cavalry under JENKINS. The cavalry is some miles in the advance, and will probably come up to Carlisle to-night.
The authorities here expect an attack by to-morrow or Friday, Artillery has been placed in position in the fortifications, and troops have been sent to a proper distance in front.
People from the towns above are flocking into Harrisburgh in large numbers. They bring with them numerous horses and cattle, and whole cart loads of furniture and other property. Three hundred contrabands have just come into town, having arrived from Carlisle. Nine prisoners, including three contrabands, have been brought in from Dauphin, situated six miles above here on the Susquehanna. They were all mounted on good horses, and the saddles are of a uniform pattern.
The rebels burned the bridge at Scotland this afternoon.

I guess Gettysburg is “Christmas in July” for Civil War fans.
I like how the commander of the Monitor is bitching about how he wasn’t provided with the right guns and that was the reason for not taking out the Merrimack.
And then going on to say 5 inches of armor wasn’t enough. Although to this uneducated reader, it sounds more like a low-bid contract problem with QC during construction.
Some things never change.
