A Houston public school teacher and her family have been evicted from a luxury home they were squatting in for months after using a fake lease to remain on the premises.
Amberlyn Prather had been ordered by a judge last month to vacate the home she and her family were shacking up in after illegally taking residence in the property, which was listed for sale and vacant, in January by flaunting a fabricated lease agreement, according to ABC13.
“It’s insane,” realtor Shanequa Garrett, the authorized seller of the property, told the outlet in May after the courts ruled the family had been squatting in the suburban home and needed to be evicted.
Prather, a fourth-grade teacher in the Houston Independent School District, squeeze in over two more weeks at the property before Garrett could get back to work on June 15, when they were officially removed — despite being ordered to leave at the beginning of the month.
“Finally, they’re out,” Garrett told the outlet. “Now it’s to keep the squatters out completely. We don’t want another situation like this.”
Garrett cracked down on how the family gained access to the home when she conducted an inspection.
“They could climb on a trash can and climb on the roof,” Garrett told the outlet. “From this window (which was loose), they can just open it from the outside and jump in. Because we kept getting the house rekeyed, and they kept getting in.”
The Houston realtor was forced to make several court appearances to expose the squatters and was told by the constable’s offices that the issue was a civil matter and not criminal throughout the ordeal.

whatever it is it’s a damn shame.
You should be able to leave your house without worrying a bunch of reprobates will break in and take over.
Justice, like nature. Abhors a vacuum. This will happen soon enough. It worked for the Italian families in the New World.
That man’s eyes are filled with remorse.
Bless his heart.

Attacks on private property are attacks on civilization.
Back in the day, the mafia took care of things, got their cut and everything ran like clockwork.
Is this something taught in the “CRT” classes? When I hear “teens” “brawl in McDonalds” or “squatters” is is 99% of the time black people.
I agree.
That is why I am saying this could be the easiest way to start a criminal investigation into that fraud charge. If the owner/leasing agent has not filed a copy at the county/city records, then that would be a good probable cause to begin a criminal investigation.
Not if the word "reparations" rings a bell.
Lots of people ended up dead when the mafia was calling the shots. Do enough research on the mob and you’ll discover real quick that they’re a bunch of animals.

How is this not a crime? It’s B&E.
Seems like it, right? But the cops won't do anything.
I had a renter load up his truck with everything from my garage. I blocked him in the driveway and called the cops. All they said was, "What do you want us to do?" And they did nothing.
Spot on
As other posters pointed out, this is a problem nationwide. For whatever reason, the law doesn’t want to get involved except through the court system and that’s not right.
I haven’t been able to determine IF the homes squatters pick are empty and on the market OR do they sometimes take over if a property is for sale but the REAL OWNERS are still living in it? Would it be safe to take a trip in that case leaving the house empty of the true owners/residents with a FOR SALE sign in the front yard?
This has been news in GA lately and the owner of a large home was in the Army and deployed...came home and found her home had been taken over...
Hard to believe that state legislatures won’t find it necessary to take this up and put an end to the nightmares people are experiencing but not surprising!
> The Mafia needs to be rebooted.
That is the theme of The Godfather. The mafia existed because there were many people that could not go to the police or the justice system to get their disputes resolved.
What is insane is the squatters weren’t forcibly removed from the property - immediately.
We had a “squatter” on one of our properties - a very good, long-term tenant let his girlfriend move in - we allowed it b/c he’d been on the property for years and was very reliable.
Turned out the girlfriend was psycho - the tenant fled, wrote us a long letter of apology - this was a high-end neighborhood and we were getting complaints from the neighbors of this woman ranting and raving in the street in the middle of the night - police were called many times, did nothing - claiming it was a “civil matter.” Ended up in court on a number of occasions - judge kept siding with the psycho even though no rent had been paid in a year (this was pre-Covid). We finally got an eviction order - only b/c the squatter showed up for court late, otherwise she would have gotten another stay. The sheriff wouldn’t do the eviction - we had to get someone from psychiatric services to help. Finally got her out.
Water and electrical had been cut off for months - so the inside was completely destroyed. Holes were punched in the walls, including the garage walls - and there was sewage all over the house. We thought the house might have to be condemned and bulldozed. Fortunately we were able to save the home - at very great expense.
A friend of ours had a similar thing happen on one of his rentals.
They took all the appliances, stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer and sold them! Even the water heater! they chopped the lines in two with and axe and took it as well!.
A different friend of ours had the same thing happen to him, so he bolted the appliances to the floor. Didn’t work. They still stole them................
Another story of a reminder why I never want to be a landlord.
Where are the B & E charges??? The trespassing charges??? Destruction of private property?? The theft charges??????
what? when did that happen, if you remember the year?
Thank God i am not a landlord anymore.
A teacher or a teach whore?
