A recently divorced woman lost her entire 401(k) savings to a scammer she met on Tinder who convinced her to invest in cryptocurrency — the latest “pig butchering” scheme targeting lonely people.
Rebecca Holloway, 42, a mother-of-three, said she was swindled out of $100,000 by a scammer claiming to be a French entrepreneur named “Fred” after the two matched on Tinder in March, the Daily Mail reports.
She added: “Looking back, the signs are so obvious. But at the time you want to believe it’s real.”
The scam that hit Holloway is the latest example of “pig butchering,” a term that refers to a months-long scheme to “fatten up” victims with fake romance before “butchering” with fake investment advice. Holloway told the outlet that Fred urged her to invest in cryptocurrency as they grew closer in the wake of the latest crypto crash fall of Silicon Valley Bank.
The man eventually convinced her to invest all of her retirement funds.
“Single women approaching middle age are so vulnerable,” Holloway said about the incident. “We have money but we might not have met the right guy yet. And suddenly this good-looking man starts talking to you and you’re excited.”

Generally, I agree with that.
OTOH, it depends upon with which head the men are thinking.

Would be even funnier if he were in on the "scam" and getting a share of the "proceeds" (his own money).

Told them Ontario wasn't too far for me to drive up and check them out. When would be a convenient time to do so? As you might guess, never heard from them again.
They mail it from Canada so you can't get the fraud inspector for the U.S. Postal Service to investigate.
Scams like these are everywhere. Social Security scams, investment scams, IRS scams, etc. And make no mistake about it. Many of these scams are VERY sophisticated.
And here is where the government should play a part. Warn people! Run ads on TV and on the radio. Put fliers in government mailings. Protect the vulnerable.
This would take little effort. And it would be - for once - a good use of tax dollars.
There are dozens of catfish stories/video on YouTube.
Some victims are old, some are ugly, some are obviously stupid or mentally unwell, some seem to be just terribly alone. They all have something in common.
That is the imaginary sweetheart or lover is out of their league in looks. Men with muscled abs, women with big hooters and flat bellies and both always with nearly model faces.
No kidding. Young, good looking guys have targeted vulnerable, older women since ... forever?

Then at the bottom of the email, it has the "Ebay" note saying "If you would like to contact the person, please login to Ebay...".
So basically, if you couldn't keep a cool head after being insulted in the email, you would have logged into a scam site, and bingo, you've been had.
Usually the scammer tries to charm you, but this one did the opposite.

You can bet she took at least half of his shit that HE earned. Payback is a bitch.
Usually that 1/2 is actually 3/4. Reminds me of the Jerry Reed song “She got the gold mine, I got the shaft”.
I am by nature suspicious. And here’s where I’ll give YouTube credit. YouTube has tons of videos that explain how these scams are run. I’ve learned a lot there.

She’ll re-open her divorce to change the property settlement based on a change in circumstances, arguing that the children shouldn’t suffer for her mistakes. Hubby will get hosed again.
