Forcing stores into playing cop and checking IDs for cigarettes needs to stop. If the kid can murder her own child or have her genitalia mutilated, why is the store employee responsible for what they put in their lungs?
If the State has a problem with the habits of minors, let them deal with the parents.

In this day and age, I simply don’t understand why clerks are not better protected. It wouldn’t be that hard to do. Put a sheet of plexiglass two feet above the counter, going up maybe five feet. Call it a Covid guard, or whatever. That would stop anyone from jumping over the counter.
Install a lockable door to stop anyone from getting behind the counter.
As a side note, there’s a convenience store I sometimes visit. It’s on the edge of a really bad part of town. The clerk is behind this small little counter. If someone wanted to attack her, they’d need take only two steps. I’m actually surprised it hasn’t happened yet.
