In this day and age, I simply don’t understand why clerks are not better protected. It wouldn’t be that hard to do. Put a sheet of plexiglass two feet above the counter, going up maybe five feet. Call it a Covid guard, or whatever. That would stop anyone from jumping over the counter.
Install a lockable door to stop anyone from getting behind the counter.
As a side note, there’s a convenience store I sometimes visit. It’s on the edge of a really bad part of town. The clerk is behind this small little counter. If someone wanted to attack her, they’d need take only two steps. I’m actually surprised it hasn’t happened yet.

In one city back east they made that illegal since it prevented thieves from robbing the stores.
