Several Target stores in Oklahoma City were evacuated Saturday after bomb scares that involved threatening emails being sent to local media stations and municipal agencies.
The Oklahoma City Police Department confirmed the emails and said the messages included threats about three bombs hidden at different stores and that police would have to figure out which of the locations were the right ones.
At least two stores were subsequently evacuated shortly at 5pm Saturday, just after police were alerted to the threatening emails.
Police notified Target managers of the threat but left it up to them to decide whether or not to evacuate.
Police have not yet confirmed a motive but several similar threats have been issued across the country in response to the retail chain's decision to remove or relocate the store's Pride Month collection.
In Oklahoma, a bomb squad was alerted to the threats, but never deployed.
A Target spokesperson said of the weekend incident: 'The safety of our team members and guests is our top priority. Law enforcement investigated claims regarding several stores in the Oklahoma City area today and determined these stores are safe. Our stores are currently open and operating regular hours.'
Police described the initial threats as 'vague,' though Sergeant Rob Robertson of the Oklahoma City Police Department said: 'Whether it's a hoax or not we have to take it seriously.'
KFOR television reported it had received the threatening email, which began by saying: 'We are going to play a game.'
The email then referenced the date April 19, 1995 - the date of the Oklahoma City bombing.

Bomb threats are not a good idea these days. With modern technology, the perps are usually caught.

I am surprised there was anyone in Target to evacuate.
I went over there b/c my optometrist is inside and I needed my glasses fixed. Parking lot was empty as was the store - it’s usually very crowded at that time of day.
No one in my optometrist’s office either - the staff was sitting around - told me I could have an immediate appt. if I wanted that day or the next.
I hope it’s b/c of the boycott - but felt sorry for the optometrist and her office staff.
Bomb threats are made by crazy people.
I’m so amazed...given that the NSA spies on everyone...that whoever is making these threats cannot be quickly identified.

A recent issue of Reader’s Digest, which my wife likes, had an upbeat story of a gay male couple. My wife, who doesn’t pay close attention to current events, did not like to see that in Reader’s Digest.
Oh, they can be identified all right. The problem is that they are not the people that the FBI *wants* to identify.
