I Forced my Teen Daughter to Gut a Fish to Learn a ‘Life Skill’ — Now my Family Is Angry
New York Post ^ | June 8, 2023 | Allie Griffin

A father forced his grossed-out young daughter to gut a fish he bought at the store to teach her a “life skill” — and he’s now asking strangers on the internet if it was wrong to do so after his wife grew angry at him.

The 38-year-old dad of two girls, 13 and 10, posted in the popular Reddit group “Am I the A–hole” to ask that exact question after teaching his older daughter to debone and descale a fish against her will.

Fair_Moose_4755 explained that he and his wife have been teaching their girls a variety of “life skills such as cooking, cleaning and car maintenance” and recently the family went on a camping trip. His oldest daughter learned to make the fire, pitch the tent and go fishing, he wrote.

Hi.

Help me here...

A few writers have stated what I’m going to post. Heinlein, for one. Can’t remember the others.

Be advised all you liberals, democrats and city dwellers...

1. Learn how to swim.
2. Learn how to make a fire (w/o a lighter).
3. Learn how to build a shelter.
4. Learn how to fish, crab and clam.
5. Learn how to hunt (no matter the method).
6. Learn how to field dress, butcher and cook your kill.

That right there is a good start. How is that taught to all males by the age of 10?

Where do they think the fish they eat come from?

Gut fish? Oh that is sooooo lame!

He should have taught them to gut a deer, now that is something they need to know!

Hopefully he already taught his daughter how to pitch a baseball so she can pitch the fish heads at her mother.

“Honest officer, my gun was lost in a boating accident.”

Classic. And, you sneakily reported it to the public. Way to go, guy!

Don’t forget to file the official paperwork if your state requires that — CaCaLand does.

I grew up cleaning fish. Started about 5 or 6. Still do. I actually enjoy it especially coming off the boat with a very cold beer or cold glass of Chardonnay . Just remember that Jesus was ok about catching and eating fish.

he’s now asking strangers on the internet if it was wrong to do. Why even ask anyone for “permission”? much less on the internet. Teach your kids everything you can because time is short. They grow up fast and then they are gone.

My daughter could gut a fish by the time she was 12. When she was in college, she taught a couple of her friends how to clean crappie. The other girls were heading toward a career in medicine. They loved it. And the fish were tasty.

I watched my Dad replace the wax seal for a toilet, later I did it myself. I tried to teach my two daughters to do things (not the toilet) like yard work, but I ended up doing everything myself. My younger daughter almost ruined the engine in her car by running it almost totally out of oil- I showed her how to check her oil and where to put it in, and instead of catching on, I slowly watched her eyes glaze over. I put the oil in myself and checked it thereafter. Better than letting her ruin her engine🙄.At least the older one likes to learn new things and be a little more self-sufficient…

I needed more support from my wife to tell our daughters, “get out there and help your father”. I never got it.

Nothing strange after seeing deer hanging in the garage for years before that.

You left a deer hanging in your garage for years? Didn't it smell something awful?
