TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Debate surrounding Florida’s new restrictions on gender-affirming care focused largely on transgender children. But a new law that Republican presidential candidate and Gov. Ron DeSantis signed last month also made it difficult – even impossible – for many transgender adults to get treatment.
Eli and Lucas, trans men who are a couple, followed the discussions in the Legislature, where Democrats warned that trans children would be more prone to suicide under a ban on gender-affirming care for minors and Republicans responded with misplaced tales of mutilated kids. Eli said he and his partner felt “blindsided” when they discovered the bill contained language that would also disrupt their lives.
“There was no communication. … Nobody was really talking about it in our circles,” said Eli, 29.
Like many transgender adults in Florida, he and Lucas are now facing tough choices, including whether to uproot their lives so that they can continue to access gender-confirming care. Clinics are also trying to figure out how to operate under regulations that have made Florida a test case for restrictions on adults.
Lucas, 26, lost his access to treatment when the Orlando clinic that prescribed him hormone replacement therapy stopped providing gender-affirming care altogether. The couple also worries about staying in a state that this year enacted several other bills targeting the LGBTQ+ community.
“My entire life is here. All my friends, my family. I just got a promotion at my job, which I’m probably not to be able to keep,” Lucas, who works in a financial aid office at a college, said. “I’m losing everything except Eli and my pets moving out of here. So this was not a decision that I took lightly at all.”

They aren’t women and that’s not health care.
‘Gender affirming care’ is not healthcare - it’s elective surgery. One trans person cheerily explained that although he believed he now passed as a woman, he wanted more surgery and went on to nit pick like some Hollywood Diva - because he wasn’t paying for the surgery (covered as ‘healthcare’) he decided to go ‘all the way’ and get everything he wanted.
There are horrible side effects to the hormones - most of which the patients are never warned about. It’s medical malpractice but it makes big bucks.
So this clinic has made a business decision. They could still provide these services, but they have chosen not to. Doesn't sound like a problem with the law.
Key bit: law mandates that transition treatments be under a Florida doctor, and not via out of state “telehealth” video conferencing or from nurse practitioners, and makes doctors liable for malpractice lawsuits.
The law also contains language that she said could scare off doctors who would be otherwise willing to treat trans patients, such as a 20-year statute of limitations to sue over care they provide.
Do they need help packing?
I did not know this, thank you for the update.
Now would be a good time to own a moving van company.
It is unethical to treat mental illness with surgery, even in adults.
They aren’t women and that’s not health care.
A chilling thought: these “clinics” are closing because they lost their main source of income when the state banned “gender affirming care” for children. So it isn’t profitable for them to just “treat” adults. Seemingly out of nowhere, 25% of children believe they are not the sex they were born as, and that they will die unless they get this mutilation and we normals should pay for it. A revolution has happened to destroy our children while we were busy arguing about tax rates.
In the film “What is a Woman” a trans-man (who at the age of 42 was conned into becoming a “man”) “And if I can be conned - how much easier for a 16 year old!?” She is very active in getting the “gender-care” shut down for kids.
She was saying how she has numerous health problems already. I forget what she said how much higher the odds were, but it was VERY high that after 10 years on hormones a person will have cancer.
NONE of these adverse risks are presented ahead of time to the patient. I understand that they sign paperwork to have the drugs and procedures performed, but I would think that not being told all of the possible problems would open the doctors to lawsuits.
These people with gender dysphoria need SO MUCH BETTER help.
Nevermind your 30-year mortgage to pay for your house- they need hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund this!
I once calculate that I would have been able to pay-off my mortgage in 3 years, if not for the taxes taken. Instead I had a 30 year mortgage.
My mistake, they are referred to as “trans men”, so “Eli” and “Lucas” are not men, just two lesbians who want to be men. This is how schizophrenics screw up normal people’s views. Never going to happen no matter how badly they mess up their brain chemistry with hormones. So, do they each have their own strap-on or do they share one?
I think they are women. The article says "trans men," so that means women who claim to be men.
Apparently, it's a "trans men" couple, so both partners are women. I suppose it's two lesbians who think they're both gay men, albeit gay men without penises.
Yes, it can get confusing.
Oh let’s get real!
We have no idea what they are and neither do they.
No values for them. they are more worried for their month to month hormone treatment than paying for a home.
What health care is anybody talking about? Body mutilation is NOT healthcare, any more than cutting one’s own forearms is health care, or getting a tattoo is health care. Body mutilation is a voluntary submission to pain and disfigurement which indicates an underlying problem with mental state, and does not alleviate that pervasive belief of “being born in the wrong body” in any way, shape, form or manner, nor is it ultimately irreversible. The maximum possible result is to render the born male a neuter, or a born female a neuter. Perhaps this is a very Darwinian resolution to the long-term problem, eliminating themselves from the gene pool.
