Tam Wai Jia, 35, had always known that humanitarian work would be her life. She had even spent a year serving in Uganda with her husband. But when the doctor was given a chance to go to Africa on a medical mission for seven weeks, her first instinct was to say no - because it took her away from her daughters aged two and four at the time. She talks about making that decision and the lessons she learn

There wasn’t humanitarians work she could do at home???
YES!!
She had only one job.
If she only does it maybe once? No. Parents go for bussiness trips and crap all the time, but seven weeks is LONG. I understand wanting to help the vulnerable, especially in places where expertise doesn’t exist. A one-time adventure is forgivable.
Doing it repeatedly while neglecting to raise her own kids? Yes. There’s sh¡t you can do at home to make the world a better place and still be there to raise your children.
Apparently her children were not human enough to qualify.
A tour with the fifth fleet is a longer assignment.
Seven weeks away from mom is a lot for a two year old, but beyond that, going to a place that needs humanitarian work sounds risky.
The cobbler’s children never have shoes.

Yeah, you suck at being a parent.
I used to be gone on “humanitarian” trips for 6 or 7 months at a time. We called it deployment. Fortunately i had a beautiful and dedicated spouse that took care of my little ones while i was gone.
Yes, you’re a bad parent. Especially for going to Africa, which is salvageable, as this African-American attests:

Yes, you are.
We’re they in their teens and staying with involved dad or grandparents it would be normally ok.
You are their ONLY mother. There are lots of doctors in the world.
Here’s the order of taking care of people: self, because if you don’t do that you can’t take care of others. Then your family, so they can take care of you when you are no longer able. Then neighbors, since there maybe a time of disaster when we all need each other, plus it is the proper thing to do in general. There is no reason why this doesn’t happen work everywhere in the world.
Yes....do your humanitarian work when they leave the nest. You never wanted them, did you. Bet you never come back....and are really headed for Florida.
Exactly
Very good. And thank you — and I thank your wife — for your service.
Absolutely- you totally suck at being a parent. Your children should urinate on your grave when you die
