The steamship Columbia, Capt. BARTON, from New-Orleans, May 28, and steamship George Cromwell, Capt. POST, May 27, arrived yesterday morning.
At 3 1/2 o'clock of the 28th, the Columbia passed barks Alice Provost and Scandinavian at anchor at Southwest Pass.
On Saturday, 30th, at 2 P.M., off Sand Key, passed steamship Star of the South, from New-Orleans, 27th, going to Key West.
On Friday, May 29, off Tortugas, the George Cromwell exchanged signals with steamship Geo, Washington, for New-Orleans.
The Era of the 27th says:
"We have authentic information which enables us to state that the forces of Major-Gen. BANKS have formed a junction with those of Gen. AUGUR, and are in the rear of Port Hudson.
In fact, that stronghold of the enemy is closely besieged and hemmed in by our troops, so that in all probability there is no chance for the rebels to escape.
Gen. BANKS moved down the Red River with his army, making Simmsport his rendezvous, whence he crossed the Mississippi to Bayou Sara. Thence he-moved down to Port Hudson, uniting with Gen. AUGUR, who moved up from Baton Rouge.
Col. GRIERSON, with his celebrated cavalry, is co operating in the investment of Port Hudson.
The gunboats had steam up, and were ready to move on Sunday. We understand that the mortar fleet opened lire on Sunday night, inflicting considerable damage upon the enemy, and silencing several of his guns.
The close investment of Port Hudson, of coarse, cuts off the enemy's supplies entirely, and as he is believed to have been short of provisions previously, we think the speedy fall of this stronghold is insured, even if Gen. BARKS should not order an assault of the works.

General Schurz fought with the revolutionary army against Prussia during the Year of Revolution of 1848. He along with many other Germans, called Forty-Eighters, escaped to American. The Forty-Eighters, given what they fled from, saw the preservation of the Union as a strike for freedom for both their new home and their old home. The Confederacy represented everything they detested: slavery and aristocratic privilege.
