Harold John Avery Russell[1][2] (January 14, 1914 – January 29, 2002) was an American World War II veteran. After losing his hands during his military service, Russell was cast in the epic drama film The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), which earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He was the first non-professional actor to win an Academy Award for acting and the first Oscar recipient to sell his award.
One of my all time favorite movies. Myrna Loy was smoking hot.

My wife’s 98 year old grandfather who was in the 82nd Airborne and jumped into Normandy on D-Day said that he was taught explosives handling by Harold Russell before leaving for England in 1943. He loves this movie.
Wonderful film. Years later, Harold Russell had a small guest part on the TV series “China Beach.”

I have purchased more than a few copies of this film to give to friends.
Returning to the world is not always an easy event.
My wife and I watched a lot of old movies together. I had trouble remembering the name of this once and called it “Three Came Home”. But of course, that was another movie.
She was way ahead of me, knowing all the stars of the’40’s. When I started watching with her, I thought everyone was Victor Jory. That became a long standing joke between us.
We also had a game of recalling lesser know actors. One of us would blurt out “Louis Calhern”, the other would reply with “Charles Bickford”.
