‘Sweetest’ toddler missing from daycare found dead down a well

A 2-year-old Canadian girl was found dead down a well after going missing from her daycare — with staff only realizing when the mom came to pick her up, according to reports.

Little Vienna Rose Irwin was discovered missing Thursday afternoon when mom Claire arrived at Watch Me Grow Day Care in Cobourg, Ontario, according to the Toronto Sun.

After a frantic search, she was found dead down an open well about an hour later, Global News said.

A fundraiser called her the “most beautiful and sweetest little girl” who “gained her angel wings in a way parents only think about in their worst nightmares.”

Neighbors recalled staff earlier rushing around begging for help finding the toddler as cops also raced to the scene.

That won’t bring her back. Every mother has to be prepared for this if she sends her child to daycare. Consider it before marrying someone who can’t provide for her to stay home with her kids or before having kids with a guy with whom she won’t marry

Exactly what the Mrs and I did, she stayed at home, I worked. 3 successful young ladies they became.

Open wells can happen at home. The U.S. and Canada have tens of thousands of abandoned wells that were never filled and were poorly covered. Our across the street neighbors raised two boys. One day the wood cover of an old well on their property rotted away and fell in. The yard had been landscaped over the well cover and there was probably 8 to 12 inches of dirt and plants over the old wood well cover. Their boys were probably 6 and 8 years old at the time and, fortunately, nobody fell in.

We are on suburban quarter-acre lots; the neighborhood was built on old orchard lands dotted with wells. The well was never disclosed when they bought the house and the property records did not show the well. It cost them a lot of money to pour a concrete plug in the well so it can never open cup again.

So, even with a stay-at-home mom, these tragedies can happen.

I doubt the daycare center in Ontario ignored an open well on their property (who would do that?). They probably had an old well open up just like our neighbors had. Of course, that doesn’t excuse the girl getting out of the building and wandering around on the property by herself.

Why would they leave a well open when they have 2 year old's running around? My daughter worked at two daycare centers. Some don't have enough workers to safely supervise small children. They usually keep the kids in a fenced in play area when they go outside to play. It's a real shame that this family lost their precious child. I don't know how I would handle such a loss.
