Swansea University researchers have found that a drug commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes can potentially be used in the treatment of autoimmune disorders.
Academics have found that the drug, canagliflozin (also known as Invokana), could be used to treat autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus as it targets T-cells, which form an essential component of the immune system. Canagliflozin is a drug that controls blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, however researchers have found an unexpected role for the drug involving the human immune system.
Existing research has reported that targeting T-cell metabolism in autoimmunity can lead to therapeutic benefits. T-cells are a type of white blood cell that help the body fight infections and diseases, but in autoimmune diseases they have been observed to attack healthy tissues.
The new study found that canagliflozin dampens T-cell activation, suggesting that the drug could be repurposed as a treatment for T-cell driven autoimmunity.
Dr. Nick Jones said, "Our findings are significant as they provide the foundation for the clinical development of canagliflozin for the treatment of certain autoimmune diseases. As the drug is already widely used and has a known safety profile in humans, it could potentially reach clinic quicker than any new drugs developed and bring valuable benefits more swiftly to patients with autoimmune disorders."

One of my UC meds is $1400 a month and the other is $1550 per month.
If the Diabetic drug works, $600 is a steal.
I took Invokana for a while, until my insurance stopped covering it and switched me to Jardiance.
Fasting down regulates the activity of the T cells and body consumes the malfunctioning T cells for energy and regenerates new healthier ones once the fast ends.
5 day fasts periodically or, if you are not able to fast for that long, use Dr. Valter Longo’s fasting mimicking diet as an alternative.
If nerve or neurological issues are present -7+ days is more effective.
A key seems to be the cyclic nature of a regular periodic cycle of fasting/fasting mimicing diet followed by a suitable regeneration period for the rebuilding.
After the fasts, some diet modifications to a more healthy diet are beneficial.
A low sugar, low processed carbohydrates seems to work best but not eating excessively combined with periodic caloric deficit seems to be a key although a low carb, ketogenic diet seems to have some advantages. .
This has even been shown to help improve MS including re mylination of damaged nerve tissue which has been kind of the holy grail of MS research.
The metabolic process and pathways by which this occurs has been mapped out and is pretty interesting and makes sense.
