George Washington University has changed its school nickname to the Revolutionaries.
In a video posted Wednesday on the school’s social media accounts, Chuck Todd, host of NBC’s “Meet the Press” and an alumnus of the school made the announcement.
“Raise high Revolutionaries,” Todd said in the video, updating the school’s chant.
The nickname change comes after criticism from students and the university community who felt the previous name “Colonials” represented colonizers “who stole land and resources from indigenous groups, killed or exiled native peoples and introduced slavery into the colonies” according to a statement posted on the university’s website.

What a bunch of weenies
The “Grownups” need to grow up and show some spine.
“Rebels” would have been a better choice; fits on stationery and sweatshirts better. Add a new fight song to the tune of “Dixie” and make the day complete.
I bet the Revolutionaries see themselves like this.
As opposed to "Revolutionaries," which includes historical figures like Mao, Lenin, and Pol Pot.
After Washington, we weren’t colonials any more, so the name didn’t quite fit.
Isn't it about time they changed the name of the school?
My home town’s team, in Acton MA, was called the ‘colonials’ and they changed it to the ‘revolution’.
totally ignored petition to keep the name from alumni (roughly 1000+ signatures). pushed by a 3 person school committee to avoid ‘offending’ someone.
this is the home town of Captain Isaac Davis then commander of the Acton Minutemen and the first officer killed at the north bridge as the first 2 shots rang out (later dubbed the ‘shot heard round the world’ by Emerson). he’s also the one depicted as the minuteman statue.
no such thing as coincidence.
“Revolutionaries” ....in a different kind of way im assuming.
The GWU degraded itself by changing its nickname.
It is debateable whether the colonists really stole land and resources from indigenous groups, killed or exiled native peoples and introduced slavery.
Someone made a short-sighted, unsupported, and debatable assertion about colonists. Did they selectively use only data that supported their narrative?
The colonists took great risks to escape tyranny and preserve religious freedom to come to an undeveloped land. It cost many their lives.
They brought technology, education, law and order, the concept of property rights, literacy and humanity with them. Superior technology often wins.
In countries where colonizers exited leaving all the resources and knowhow behind, many indigenous people reverted to their backward ways leaving the country unsafe, unhealthy, uncivilized, and unmanageable.
GWU went off the tracks by caving to an ignorant few and being proud of their foolishness.
Why not prove your point by giving back all your university land to the first Americans?
I am waiting for a name change for Oklahoma when the morons learn the translation of that name.
“Raise high Revolutionaries” sounds like they’re calling for dopers.
Sigh - and who do they think the Revolutionaries were?
Colonizers “who stole land and resources from indigenous groups.
Indigenous Groups
1.No houses just hide teepee’s and mud huts
2.No wheel
3.No ships
3.No change for thousands of years
4.Bows and arrows and spears
They had everything to gain with the colonizers
