Volkswagen Bets an Old SUV Can Help It Win Over Americans

“Made in America by Americans, an American brand is a powerful thing, and we’re excited about it,” Scout Chief Executive Officer Scott Keogh told The Wall Street Journal this year after closing the deal to locate Scout’s first manufacturing plant in South Carolina.

“This is going to put us right into the heart of the action,” he added.

...A few months after the Navistar acquisition, in March 2021, VW’s management board held a strategy conference at the company’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, and laid the groundwork to resurrect the Scout brand as a rugged all-electric SUV and pickup truck, according to company officials. Then, last year, VW announced its plan to revive the brand as a fully-owned independent American subsidiary with local management centered around an iconic American vehicle—a first for VW.

Scout dates back to the late 1950s, when Ted Ornas, an auto designer for International Harvester, designed the company’s first Scout, a four-wheel-drive recreational vehicle, something that didn’t exist at the time.

IIRC AAA has some recharge vehicles able to respond. Probably ICE with battery pack rechargers on the back.
That's comforting....;O)

Yep, keep it simple. And have a base model diesel w/ a manual transmission.

You might have to wait a while on the stick shift.

“In 2021, stick shift enthusiasts comprised only 0.9% of the U.S. auto market. By 2022, that number jumped to 1.2%, and sales figures for the first few months of 2023 indicate that the proportion has already hit 1.7%. This is still very marginal, but it does represent an increase of nearly 89%. “

The first Scouts were popular with postmasters and mail contractors in the Rockies. There’s still a few in service.

all-electric SUV and pickup truck

When you take a dive off the high-high board, it takes a while to call it splash or splat. Let the next CEO deal with it, perhaps. Or know in advance that the fix is in, long term. (I wouldn't bet on that though, it just doesn't make sense, all tech facts considered.)

—”When you take a dive off the high-high board, it takes a while to call it splash or splat.”

The recent VW CEO Diess made a SPLAT and was sent walking.
To compete with Tesla he had to cut labor and labor has about half of the director’s seats also the German State of Lower Saxony OWNS a large chunk of VW.
The two groups did not like the idea of using less labor and toasted him.

The very same groups are already making environmental/labor claims about the new Tesla giga factory in Germany.

Clearly, they needed something to overcome a host of internal problems. And they have Mr. Musk building cars in VWs backyard:
“While a Volkswagen ID. 3 takes an average of 30 hours to build (for the entire process), a Tesla Model Y is completed within only 10 hours. The Trinity Project, with more than 2 billion euros in funding, aims at reducing this manufacturing time, trying to catch up with Tesla.”

“Chevy Cruze diesel got 52 mpg highway rated. Reports of manual trans. getting 70 mpg.”

My Silverado 4x4 with the 3.0 Duramax gets 38mpg highway, and 26-29 city. I average about 650+ miles in range.

When it does a DPF regen, my mpg’s crater for several miles then creep back up.
