When you take a dive off the high-high board, it takes a while to call it splash or splat. Let the next CEO deal with it, perhaps. Or know in advance that the fix is in, long term. (I wouldn't bet on that though, it just doesn't make sense, all tech facts considered.)

The recent VW CEO Diess made a SPLAT and was sent walking.
To compete with Tesla he had to cut labor and labor has about half of the director’s seats also the German State of Lower Saxony OWNS a large chunk of VW.
The two groups did not like the idea of using less labor and toasted him.
The very same groups are already making environmental/labor claims about the new Tesla giga factory in Germany.
Clearly, they needed something to overcome a host of internal problems. And they have Mr. Musk building cars in VWs backyard:
“While a Volkswagen ID. 3 takes an average of 30 hours to build (for the entire process), a Tesla Model Y is completed within only 10 hours. The Trinity Project, with more than 2 billion euros in funding, aims at reducing this manufacturing time, trying to catch up with Tesla.”
