New York legislators are vowing to terminate a lucrative state tax break for film and TV productions if they replace humans with artificial intelligence.

“With the advent of AI, we want to make sure that we continue to protect workers and create jobs for New Yorkers,” state Sen. Lea Webb (D-Binghamton) said in a statement about the bill she introduced Wednesday.

“It is important to ensure that the money we invest in economic development is actually being spent here.”

The legislation is the latest state-level proposal aimed at reining in AI as emerging technology becomes more embedded in government programs, politics, and daily life.

Outstanding bills before the Legislature include measures aimed at cracking down on the use of AI in hiring, politics, and advertising. Other legislation would set up a state commission to study how best to regulate AI and robotics.

Webb’s bill would specifically ban TV and film companies from qualifying for the lucrative “subsidy” while using “synthetic media in any component of production that would displace any natural person.”

The savings in dealing with AIs vs. unions must make $700 million seem like a good deal.

LOL! These are the same morons who gave Andrew Cuomo money in the budget for technology projects that never opened. One of those projects was in Syracuse. Cuomo spent $15 Million to build a Film Hub. The building was constructed, and the other party backed out of the deal. The building later sold for $1. New York’s State Legislature is controlled by Democrats a little more than 2-1.

ha ha. The movie industry is hardly the worst of it. AI and robotics in general will impact a broad array of jobs. There is no slowing down new tech.
