Matthew Weiner has announced that Don Draper, the advertising genius behind "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke" and the Quiznos Spongmonkeys, has died at the age of 97. He is survived by his three children and 6 of his 7 wives.
Betty was such a freakin' smokeshow. Unfortunately, in Season 5, where I'm currently at, they've morphed her into a wholly unlikable giant corpulent hambeast.
Thank you for posting that youtube clip of Robert Morse. It was great and I loved it when I saw it on the show.
We binged the show a couple years ago. Loved the fashion.
I don’t know who was more 1960s macho, Don Draper or 007. Both were great characters.
Same, right? What’s stopping us from dressing like that today?
I miss the days of the minibar and cigarettes in executive suites
We used to be a proper country.
Some of my earliest memories of him was seeing him at work with clouds of cigarette smoke all around. In fact, there was a cigarette vending machine in the office.
As he saw "Mad Men", I asked him if it was true that there was drinking at work and he absolutely confirmed it, so far as management was concerned. The employees were generally forbidden but any manager with an office had hard liquor in their desk drawers. The executives had the actual mini-bars and they were able to get reimbursed for the liquor they bought for it as "entertainment expense". Anytime there was a major client win, the bottles came out and the celebrations began, usually ending late at night in a nearby restaurant/bar.
There was also a lot of "secretary chasing" in those days.
I’m secure enough in my masculinity that I can say with total confidence, that dude looked good.
Nothing but you would likely look out of place these days.
I have a closet full of suits and ties that I wore from the 1980s on up to pre-COVID. One of the great things about being a man is that your clothes rarely go out of style. That pinstripe suit I bought in 1987 for my first professional job could still be worn today - but I'd have to lose a few pounds!
However, dress codes have become quite relaxed since most everybody started working remotely once the COVID nonsense started. Even though we are mostly back to the office, khaki trousers and button down shirts with casual loafers are the order of the day. Nobody wears ties anymore, not even the CEO of my company.
Can't say I miss having to wear the suits but I'm hanging on to them just in case.
“What’s stopping us from dressing like that today?”
Nothing, really. But it would be expensive to have a hat, shoes, and gloves to match every outfit — but beautiful. A few years ago, all the ladies in church picked one Sunday when we’d all wear hats. It was very cool!
LOL... 100%
Actually, Don Draper died during the second Carter administration when he got his tax bill.
“Quiznos Spongmonkeys”
The things you don’t miss after unplugging (no idea what that is and totally don’t care).
They really went hard with the lawnmower scene. In addition to the gratuitous splatter, it generated one of Roger’s best lines. Stepping into Don’s office, he say “Jesus! It looks like Iwo Jima out there!”
Summer of ‘69 I was working at National Messenger Service in Grand Central Terminal. Picked up packages and portfolios, delivered to agencies and newspapers in town like NY Magazine, the Daily News and dozens more.
Mad Men so reminds of the places I went to as a 16 year old. Hot, nicely coiffed secretaries, stylish businessman, regular guys in the mailrooms and elevator attendants.
And nobody used a bicycle ... Graf and Sachs (the service owners) gave us subway fare for each trip. It did cross my mind then if I had a bicycle I could keep the fares.

He was responsible for that Quiznos crap?
Hubby and I used to enjoy having Quiznos once in awhile. Hubby saw those sponge monkies and nearly puked. I’d mention going to Quiznos and he’d blanch and say, “I don’t want any rat sandwiches.”
Now they seem to be closing nationwide. Was it because of the “rat sandwich” disaster of a campaign ad?
BTW - LOVED Mad Men!
Yes, those Spongemonkeys put Quiznos out of business.
After seeing them I could never eat there again. many people the same.
Not something I would want to be remembered for them
