IMPORTANT FROM NEW-ORLEANS: Capture of Alexandria by Admiral Porter; General Banks’ Forces in Possession
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 5/18/1863

The United States Mail Steamship George Washington, from New-Orleans on the 10th inst., arrived at this port yesterday. The transport George Peabody left New-Orleans on the same day.

The following important intelligence we find in an Extra of the Era, issued on the day the steamer sailed:

"Rear Admiral FARRAGUT, Fleet-Capt. JENKINS, Dr. FOWLKES, Surgeon of the fleet; E.C. GABADAN, Admiral FARRAGUT's Secretary; Fleet-Clerk PALMER and Lieut. EATON, of the Army Signal Corps, arrived here this afternoon from Brashear City, and are now at the St. Charles Hotel.

Admiral FARRAGUT and his officers left the flagship Hartford in Red River, on Friday morning, and came through the Atchafalaya River and Grand Lake to Brashear City. He brings intelligence that Alexandria was captured, on the 6th, by Admiral PORTER, with his own and a portion of Admiral FARRAGUT's fleet.

Previously to taking Alexandria, to wit, on the 4th instant, the gunboats Albatross, Estrella and Arizona went up Red River on a reconnoissance, and made a prize of all that remained of Fort DeRussy. The batteries of the fort were first engaged, and soon the steamers Grand Duke and Mary T. took a part in the fight. The Mary T. had a shot put into her boiler, and was disabled. The Grand Duke made her escape, and the fort surrendered.

In this action, Mr. J. HAMILTON, pilot, of this city, and G.W. BROWN, seaman, were killed. Mr. GEORGE MERRITT, pilot, GEORGE FYFFE, JAMES DUNN and FRANK VINCENT, seamen, were wounded.

ADDITIONAL PARTICULARS.

We have learned since writing the above, that Alexandria was taken by Admiral PORTER early on the morning of the 6th; and at 6 o'clock in the evening, Gen. DWIGHT's cavalry dashed into the place, thus forming a junction between the land forces of the Department of the Gulf

But did they burn the library...

OK I'll be serious. Alexandria is about 100 miles inland, so how is the Navy capturing it?
