Take a tour of Michael Jordan's Chicago mansion that's been on the market for 10 years and see why he can't sell it

Michael Jordan's enormous house in Chicago is still on the market after 10 years.

Jordan has tried to sweeten the pot by cutting the price nearly in half and throwing in a complete set of Air Jordans with the purchase of the house. And yet, it remains unsold and he pays more than $100,000 in annual property taxes.

The house was originally listed for $29 million and has every bell and whistle you can think of. Some "over-improvements" and the house's location are making it hard to sell the property.

He got 19 of his best years living in his dream house when he was the right age for it, so he got his money’s worth out of it.

The Baghdad dining room table was the only interesting thing in it. 19 bathrooms? Okaaay...

This may explain something too:

Gail Lissner of Integra Realty Resources called the area "much more modest" than what Jordan's property suggests.

It ain't the hood but it ain't shoreside on Lake Michigan either. My old next-door neighbor's house has the same problem on a much more modest scale: built to some very specific - OK, weird - tastes and not lakeside. Originally listed for $2 mil. Went for $670K. And I think they still got ripped off.

It looks very cold, and like some kind of institution, not a house or home.

That cold shade of grey is being used EVERYWHERE. Two years ago we were house shopping, and ALL the houses that were redecorated had grey Pergo flooring or grey tile, grey walls, grey doors. I am not that sensitive to colors, but I found it painful. The other new trends are lack of doors on the Master Bathroom heading into the Master Bedroom, and some houses had that dopey rolling barn door thing on interior doors. (That only works with high ceilings and a rustic look, not with barren grey everywhere.)

Yes. If he doesn’t open the doors wide to border crashers then it sounds racissss.

Even though I remember Jordan doing a lot for charities and underprivileged kids in Chicago.

Jordan had the house — and the surrounding property — built from scratch to his personal tastes.

Wow.

Shawshank Prison looks more inviting.

It is soulless and cold. How could anyone feel at home there?

Meghan Markle had redecorated Frogmore Cottage to look like the interior of an American hotel (with some insanely expensive vanity flourishes). Such people are out there.

1980's Miami Vice influenced design that ends up looking more like a commercial property rather than residential.

“It looks very cold, and like some kind of institution, not a house or home.”

Good description. Was thinking the same. The architecture is dull as dishwater. It looks like it could-be the campus of a new-ish rehab clinic or not-particulary-fancy private school.

I like the idea of putting in a professional quality mini-golf course. That seems fun.

I think the reasons are the Chicagp real estate market itself and that so much of the property is so heavily personalized that any potential buyer starts adding up what they will spemd in money and time to depersonalized the Michael Jordan identity off the property.

“”19 bathrooms? Okaaay...””

Our highschool area had some very, very well-off families. The kind of well-off where kids turn 16 and get a Mercedes or Porsche. One day after the track meet one of the cheerleaders said ‘my parents are gone, come over.’ The pool house of this estate was larger than the house I grew up in. I did not go into the mansion with 20 bathrooms.

It doesn’t even remotely resemble a HOME. This is why it doesn’t sell. The design resembles an OFFICE COMPLEX. No one wants to call an OFFICE COMPLEX their home.

It might be good as a donation to the US Olympic Basketball Team.

It doesn’t seem suitable for much else...

Having seen the photos, it looks like a bland, tasteless shrine to the ego of a man who made a couple billion dollars bouncing a ball.
