Naive. Everyone's a victim we turn our backs on. The problem is presented and only the rest of us can fix it.

My friends we can't compete with this. Think of how Obama and Clinton used these ideas so effectively. These people will always be with us and today's homeless encampments are out there for everyone to see. Trump would put them on the outskirts of town where they can't be seen. As for the wars he's not given credit for not starting any. No credit-more burden. '24 can't come soon enough.

Phil Ochs, the writer wanted no prisons, at all. So unhappy about it, he killed himself.

Joan Baez was once young and pretty. Those things work with the left. The hard work is done on the right. It will never be enough. Who is gonna take the time to read 1100 pages of Atlas Shrugged?

Our nation has gone from a nation of mostly strong fiercely Independent indivuals that didn’t want other people carrying their burdens for them, to a nation full of gimmedats who demand that the nation carry their burdens- they cry about being victims at the drop of a hat now. America has truly been sissified- but sadly, the gimmedats don’t care, and even brag about how much the gov gives them

The song title has to borrow from the phrase there but for the grace of God go I. It’s without the word God. It also suggests It could be us in those circumstances-we have no ability to get ourselves out of it. Fact is we do. The right has more faith in life.

You’re right. Phil Ochs didn’t see a way out so he offed himself-cowardly.

Church I went to when a kid stole that song and sang it ‘There but for Jesus, go you and I..’

Good post. Raises good points.

This song is good because it appeals to our consciences. So anyone who is uncaring or oblivious to the plight of unfortunate poor, drunk, addicted, victims of war, should be made aware and should feel guilty.

BUT, that is not the Americans I know. We have bent over backward to try to help the poor with the War on Poverty, with addiction with an unbelievable industry catering to the addicted, and have spent trillions trying to liberate people and help refugees and victims of war.

We allow our country to go bankrupt and be invaded to help the entire world.

We are generous to a fault, giving away money we don't have, to people who just get more dependent and more addicted, and more corrupted and feral.

So, Joan Baez and this song are just full of $hit. The purpose of this song is just Marxist disruption.

To get drunks and druggies to act right, shame them, let them sleep in the rain. Drive them to AA and NA meetings. Get them to church. Get them to quit whining and singing with guitars.

If they don't like interminable wars, hey, try winning one. That ends that particular war.

Many minds are so closed that even reading Atlas Shrugged doesn’t penetrate. Years ago, my wife and I discussed The Fountainhead with a Democrat friend (this is before Dems went completely nuts) who had just read the book. It was an eye-opening diagnostic.

Though an intelligent person, she was so emotionally committed to the leftist mind set that she just couldn’t grasp Rand’s intent (which you’d think was possible even while disagreeing with it). She inverted the characters, perceiving the creative Howard Roark as the bad guy, and the talentless sponge Peter Keating and the destructive Ellsworth Toohey as the heroes. From such a starting point, there is no way she could get the larger point.

Emotion is a powerful sales tool, and this is why the Left is terrified of Donald Trump, who blatantly appeals to national feeling. The Dems want to the R’s to stay in their role as dry rationalists.

Perfectly put!

Who is gonna take the time to read 1100 pages of Atlas Shrugged?

Only those of us who don't need to read it.

I read it. But...but...it's been said that Russians use 50 words when 1 will do. That's pretty much demonstrated in Atlas Shrugged. Great thinking, but geez, too wordy.

That’s pretty wild about your leftist friend and Atlas Shrugged — to invert the characters like that! And then to think that there are millions of people who see things just like she does. We conservatives really have our work cut out for us...

there but for fortune go you and I

correction: there but for working, saving, not abusing drugs or alcohol, and reserving sex for marriage go you and I

show me the country where bombs don’t fall

correction: show me the country that stands up to Hitler and other bastards, and I show you a country that is free

Joan Baez - only have one album of hers: "Diamonds and Rust".

Left-wing nut (most artists are), but a rich, unique voice. A good listen in small bits.

"Who is gonna take the time to read 1100 pages of Atlas Shrugged?"

It was only 1100? Felt like twice that. At least.

(I understand all tools don't have to be pretty, just useful).

‘Joan Baez was once young and pretty.’

she was okay to look at; but her voice was remarkable...

listen to her version of the old Irish ballad ‘Silkie’ and you’ll see for your selves...

It’s ALL about the choices one makes in life.

Even one bad choice can really screw up your life.

In 1979, I saw her at a demonstration at the National Mall in Washington, DC on behalf of the Vietnamese “boat people” who were fleeing from Vietnam’s Communist regime. One song that she performed was John Lennon’s “Imagine”—an execrable tune, although she did a beautiful rendition.

Then the leaders of the demonstration decided to march to the White House. I was at the back of the crowd, but the White House was directly behind me, and when they came my way, I found myself about five feet away from her.
