I’m OK for tonight but see that there is a freeze watch up now for tomorrow night.

I have straw over a bunch but am thinking of my lettuce and Brussel sprouts in particular. The plants are young yet and I am not sure how cold hardy they are at this point.

Looks like Thurs night is now the frost watch. Brussel sprouts are on the cold weather list, and lettuce should endure a light frost one night. I hope to grow Swiss Chard.

I know you love your Basil! :)

This season I started a new (to me) variety from seed called, ‘Limoncello’ because it’s an improvement on the everyday Lemon Basil - which I’ve always found quite ‘wimpy.’

https://www.burpee.com/basil-lemon-scented-limonchello-prod600069.html

Those ‘Internet Influencers’ are already making Martinis with it...so I’m all over that, LOL!

I’ve got four plants started and thriving in the greenhouse - just waiting for warmer night-time temps and they will be in the ground. :)

I miss my mower. :(

I can’t SLEEP knowing she is alone and cold, scared and torn apart in the repair shop! ;)

LOL!

We DO get attached .... all my mowers are named ... the guys think I’m nuts.

It’s raining ... got over 1/2” already. I staked the tomatoes tonight so nothing should be falling down if it gets windy, but so far, just a little thunder & downpours, nothing severe.

I’m just a Sweet Basil fan. Fat@ass groundhog ate the leaves off my 7 broccoli plants. The plants are Ok. The black tall collars work great. The groundhog on the other hand is destined for dispatch asap.

‘Arnold’ is the VW Golf

‘Shadow’ is the new F150

‘Black Beauty’ was my Ford Escape (I miss her, but see her often; gave her to a local family in need)

‘The Gray Ghost’ is the Infinity - which Beau has been telling me he’s going to sell...any day now. Yep. Sure. ;)

I haven’t named my mower but of course, she’s female. She’s bright orange and nothing rhymes with orange! I’ll have to think on that. ;)

My brother has an orange Kubota tractor .... we call it “Trump Tractor” LOL! He’s a major Trump fan so the name is not meant in the usual ‘Orange Man Bad’ derogatory way. I actually made a sign for it with the name, but it’s long gone.

“Sporange” is a word that rhymes with ‘orange’ - I think it’s the only one.

Orange Things: 105 Things That Are Orange in Nature
https://www.colorsexplained.com/orange-things-that-are-orange/

‘Calendula’ (my favorite homeopathic remedy right now) is on the orange list ... Callie for short?

My mowers were (from smallest to largest): Little Buddy, “Zero/Zorro” (first zero turn mower aka the ‘race horse’) and Clyde (Clydesdale, work horse). My old Windstar van was “Peaches” ... came from Georgia when I bought it used. We have an old Ford tractor that we got on Valentines Day so we called it ‘Valentine’.

‘Sporange.’ LOL!

How about ‘Lily’ after all those orange ditch lilies that grow around here? I’ll ask ‘The Overseer’ what he thinks. ;)

need advice about artichokes...my dtr gave me some to plant and I have no idea if I did it right...

is the orientation of the bulb/tuber important? some have a little green sprout on them...should that aim up?....some have nothing but hard surface.

Orange tractor? I'm guessing it's that Japanese brand? How bout calling it Kobe?

John Denver did a little skit/story about a king who couldn't help but speak in rhyme. Finally a young boy cured him by asking if he'd like an orange.

Don't know what I would call my little sub-compact white and blue Mitsubishi. Minibichi?

Got one of the big Red Deuce hybrid mater plants I got from the Amish store planted yesterday. I'm going to plant the other two but I think I'll wait a few days to plant all the rest of the mater and pepper plants. North wind with gusts to 21 and low temp of 50 tonight. I think I'll leave them in their pots huddled against the piece of roofing tin that's on the North side of the garden. Might even throw some plastic over them so they don't get a chill. The Red Deuce were needing out of the too small pots but the rest will be fine for a few more days.

I'll be putting my posts in today for the lean and lower indeterminate mater trellis system and pole bean poles, OR.

I bet pole bean vines would climb a string suspended just like the lean and lower system. Could even lean and lower if they get that tall. Maybe some small rope instead of twine going from stakes in the ground up to my horizontal board on poles?

Something like this but maybe only one row. Not a lot of room in the front yard garden and I'm only planting some of each of the 5 varieties for growing/taste trials this year. So 15, 20, 25 plants total or something. One line/row straight up and down. Easier to harvest without leaning forward and/or stepping on the base of the vines.

Might run a board or some sucker rod across the bottom to tie the bottom ends to instead of all that staking. Piece of rebar across the bottom would work. I have some 1/4" rope but it's black. Might be ok?

Found a few volunteer mater plants when I was cleaning up the garden, digging the weeds and grass out. One's potato leafed and Brandywine is the only potato leafed variety I had last year. Judging by where the volunteers are, I'm guessing the other will either be Yellow Pear cherry or Barry's Crazy Cherry, also yellow. At any rate, it will be an indeterminate variety so I can start pruning asap.

Well hell, here comes the sun. Better get out there before it gets hot and get done before it rains. Going to be perfect weather this weekend, while I'm at work.

Pollard, Looks good, should work well! Wish I had that much room to plant!

Might wrap the line 2x around the pole at the top, or better, a clove hitch, to keep your Bean sails from migrating in the wind.
Experience this season will tell if its a problem.

Interplanting of dill, good deal! Hope you get lots of beans! (Blue Lake? Kentucky Blue?)

Wow! That’s quite the bean pole set up! You’d get tons of production out of that.

I have two of these Bean and Pea Trellises from Jung’s:

https://www.jungseed.com/product/J53328/1055

One will hold my favorite pole green bean, ‘Saychelles’ and the other will hold a drying/soup bean, ‘Good Mother Stollard.’ That’s PLENTY of beans for just the two of us.

The mower is still at the shop; we’re next in line. Yeah, right! They will give us a loaner to use next week if necessary. I’ve decided her name is ‘Lily’ after the bright orange ditch-lilies that grow all over the place around here.

Lily is an Arien’s Ikon with a Kohler engine. I love her. :)

****SPIDER PICTURE ALERT!****

(Yes, spiders can be beneficial!)

Link to article: "Joro spiders are more afraid of you"

Snip......"Do you hate looking at photos of spiders? You’re not alone. Up to 15% of the population has a fear of spiders. Last year, scientists said that Joro spiders, like the one pictured here, will soon be prevalent up and down the East Coast. Now, the scientists are saying that Joro spiders are scaredy cats. Image via University of Georgia."

Snip......Why you have no need to fear

Yes, the Joro spider is venomous, but scientists said they’re not a threat to humans (or pets). Despite the spider’s large size, its fangs are quite small. Their defensive bites most likely wouldn’t even break the skin.

And, despite being an invasive species, they may even be beneficial. The spiders eat insects such as stink bugs, which cause crop damage and swarm in homes. They can help control insects without the use of pesticides....Snip...

I don't mind spiders at all. They are super-beneficial. In fact, I had two Daddy Long Legs living in my upstairs bathroom all winter. Michelle and Romeo, LOL!

I have the Orb Weavers and they are fascinating. Quite frightening when you first see one, but they are amazing weavers! They like my raspberry canes the best for some reason. There's like 22 types, but I have the yellow and black ones.
