No SS was equipped that way.Prior to 1968, SS was strictly a trim package on the Novas. The base engine was a straight six. In 1968 that changed and the SS became a performance package for the Novas. And you are correct. The smallest engine offering for the 1968-1970 Nova SS was the 350, with two optional 396 offerings. And the only V-8 for the 1971-72 Nova SS was the 350. They dropped the 396 after 1970. In 1973, the SS became strictly a trim package again.
