2023 is not even half over. Not likely and earth shattering rock songs were even released.

But there’s still a lot of 2023 to go. What if the list changes?

I prefer to remain stuck in the 80’s.

Have not heard rock in years.

All they play at my gym is a lot of shouting and chanting to computer drum tracks. Rather ghetto sounding.

New Rock sounds like ass. Stick with 50s to 80s and throw in a few from 90s

Yes. 60s 70s and 80s music all have distinct styles but the golden age as far as I’m concerned. Also I can tolerate some 90s. 1962 vintage myself.

There’s been no rock-n-roll since the music died.

I agree with most here that this new rock-type stuff is trash.

However on his list, there were a few catchy tunes, which I would have never thought possible. Glad I listened.

Me, I listen to jazz from the 50s and 60s, mostly.

Too bad you weren’t around in the 60s when things were REALLY good.

“a few catchy tunes, which I would have never thought possible”

I listen to curated playlists on Spotify that blend my favorites with new things their AI thinks I may like. I like maybe one out of 20 of their suggestions. But I do find a lot of artists and indy bands just as you describe — innovation that I never thought possible.

Rick does a nice job. But anything with Foo Fighters in it suggests that the list is tilted toward the Musical-Industrial Complex. Parenthetically, Grohl is the third most talented member of Nirvana and a vaxx shill. He's in the same bucket as Dixie Chicks and Lady Amtebellum.

For my new music, I go to Bandcamp to find new music. What the Sony et al want us to think is good, sucks bigly. Bandcamp has a searchable front end where you can find quality, unsigned new music in whatever genre you want.

As for the old FReepers who think new music sucks, you're wrong. Indeed, commerce works. Get off yer assez, go out to a bar/club, plunk down $10 for a cover charge and hear 4 bands play their guts out. Two bands will suck. One will be ok. But then you'll find that one band that blows your socks off, and renews your hope in youth and humanity...you just then buy their merch because capitalism.

Thanks for the tip to Bandcamp. I’d never heard of it before.

I just sampled a few bands and Sunbörn by Sunbörn is promising. It’s billed as a Danish ensemble with musicians from all over the world that fuses Afrobeat, jazz, soul, and funk.

It reminds me of some of similar fusions in the early and mid 70s.
