MASSIE: I support border security, but not E-verify
Twitter ^ | May 9 | RepThomasMassie

@RepThomasMassie

I will NOT vote to require EVERY American to get Biden’s permission if they want to work.

Specifically, I’m opposed to E-verify. Giving the federal government more power over YOU is a mistake in my opinion.

I support border security, but not E-verify.

Shame. eVerify all current and new workers, full-time, part-time, perm, temp, contract, day labor, everyone! Eliminate the work opportunity for illegal aliens. What does Massie think is the downside to this? We already have SSN, we already do I-9, W-2, and so forth. This does not add any further burden upon an employee. And it does not give the government any more information than it already has. What it does do is hold employers accountable to make sure they are only employing legal workers.

What power does E-Verify give the federal government over me that it doesn't already have?

"What power does E-Verify give the federal government over me that it doesn't already have?"

Half of this is unnecessary.

"What power does E-Verify give the federal government?"

It's a harassment power, like any other. Build a border wall and E-Verify is irrelevant.

Use eVerify and remove illegals from the work place. Starve them out by lack of jobs, prosecute employers that still try to employ them. No jobs, I bet most will self-deport.

But maybe the bigger problem is that most catch-and-release are given work permits while they wait hearings. Is this true? How many or what percent? I've searched this before and found the general conclusion that some, many, maybe all are given work permits but no specific answer to know what is correct.

“Build a border wall and E-Verify is irrelevant.”

Border helps stop future illegal crossing, but does nothing for the millions already here. Cut off the work and many will go home.

The ONLY reason to oppose E-Verify is to make it easier for unscrupulous employers to use wetback labor. And there are a gazillion of those. Time the existing law was enforced, and the support infrastructure brought up to current state-of-the-art.

given work permits

Who needs a work permit when there’s Home Depot and 7-11 parking lots to hang out, and do day jobs

He’s WRONG on this. Right on many things but INEXCUSABLY WRONG on opposing E-verify. E-verify needs to be strengthened and managed in a manner that will actually deter employment of illegals working with assumed identities. And, yes, it COULD do that.

E-verify is absolutely essential if the border is to be restored and the MIVs removed from the country...

Failure to pass E-verify for someone already in a job should be prison for both the MIV and the employer...

If you want to turn off the magnet that is jobs and handouts, you need the tools to identify eligibility (legal residency status), and the laws to require employers and bureaucracies to use them. E-verify was a Reagan policy, and has long had nearly unanimous support among conservatives. Democrats have fought and undermined it since day 1. Now it’s suddenly an infringement on our freedom and a “burden”? Like presenting an ID to vote is a burden? Come on Massie...

It’s been a few years since I dealt with eVerify.
The rules were that you could only run someone after they were hired, I think it was within 3 days or so. You could not check an existing employee.
If the report came back bad you could not fire the person for 30 days to give them time to appeal. If they appealed, and didn’t just take off, you could not fire them until the appeal went though the process.

Someone gets hired. Comes back “dirty”. They’re fire proof for minimum one month. If they appeal, then it’s a work free job for about 3 to 6 months.

We found that having one of the guys walk in wearing a Border Patrol cap during the interview cut way down on the red tape.

The Left wants open borders so they can treat us all as criminal suspects.

Re: "Build a border wall and E-Verify is irrelevant."

Wow - you have been mis-informed.

50%-60% of illegal immigrants in the USA come here legally with a temporary visa and never leave.

The only people who try to sneak across the border are people who cannot get a visa, because they are too young, or too poor, or because they have a criminal record or terrorist or gang affiliations.

If an illegal cannot legally work anywhere in America, he/she will self-deport or resort to crime to remain.

The present lawlessness cannot continue in America without triggering all-out civil war. Lawlessness in a nation of 330 million people is unsustainable. It will lead to massive bloodshed.

That’s exactly the right question to ask. Massie would have a lot more credibility if he wasn’t making a stand here after the U.S. government has already commandeered the employment process.

For E-Verify, a mismatch on a SS number can occur when:

The employee has not updated his or her citizenship or immigration status with SSA
The employee did not report a name change to SSA
The employee’s name, Social Security number or date of birth is incorrect in SSA records
SSA records contain another type of mismatch
The employer entered the employee’s information incorrectly in E-Verify

I believe there can also be a mismatch if the employee is a victim of identity theft.

So it makes sense to give the employee time to resolve the issue with SSA.

You will never stop the underground ecnonomy....and we should not empower the federal gov't to shut that down.

But because E-Verify will not get every illegal does not mean it is a bad idea. We cannot let the imperfect be an obstacle to progress on this.

Massey is correct, we would not need E-Verify if we had a secure border. But we don't. We need a way to filter those living inside our borders and E-Verify is the best solution for now.
