I don't think that this is exactly what you are looking for, but Johnny Rivers was the first to record "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." Glen Campbell released it a couple years later, almost exactly as Rivers had recorded it.

Glen Campbell got the hit out of it. Maybe it was how it was marketed.

I’ll second that.

I’d also say The Bangles cover of “Hazy Shade of Winter”

Spooky - Atlanta Rhythm Section. That’s a bit of a cheat considering 2 members were from The Classics IV.

Never heard the original by Beyonce but Grace Potter's cover of Why Don't You Love Me is epic.

Any Dylan song by the Byrds.

ANY Dylan song sung by anybody else. Maybe I'll give "Lay Lady Lay" a pass.

I think that people overlook how great Johnny Rivers was (is?). I used to think that he should be in the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, but I no longer care. I mean, once Dolly Parton got in over probably twenty better artists (artists who actually DID Rock N’ Roll), it just became meaningless.
