Quiet Hiring Could Be the Reason You Can't Find Work-Life Balance

Dr. Shonna Waters is Vice President of Strategic Alliances & Partnerships at BetterUp. “There’s a social contract between an employee and an employer,” Waters says, noting that some of these “contract” elements are stated, as in an employment agreement and job description, while others remain unstated and more subjective, such as workplace recognition and employees feeling appreciated and valued.

“The boundaries of work have just disappeared. And people are finding this harder and harder to push back [and return to] what was that original contract, what have we agreed to. It can feel like you're on call 24/7, and you’re just owned by the employer.”

Waters says that employees might feel that in many ways they are trying to restore parity through quiet quitting, while employers might then be trying to do the same, reacting with quiet hiring, or in some instances even quiet firing, which Gallup describes as “managers fai[ing]l to adequately provide coaching, support and career development to an employee, which results in pushing the employee out of an organization."

“I don’t know anybody who would say that their job is the job of one person. I don’t think that exists anymore in the world that we live in. You can always squeeze more out of someone. And if you can, why would you hire more people.”

Why do people make the simple things so hard?

Work-Life balance. Never heard of it until covid.

I worked my ass off to get ahead. Vacation was my reward. Retirement was my end game and I achieved it by working hard.

America is the land of pussies. The greatest generation must be proud of where we’re at.

I worked at a place for 7 years without any problems, and, when new management came in a new job description was created for me, without my input, and i was getting written up almost daily for failure to perform my duties. Talk about feeling unappreciated.

This article is complete and utter CRAP!

Prince Harry the MORON is one of their chief officers. It's a touchy-feely, full of psychobabble, WOKE, New Age garbage company.

And they can’t find people who will work. The younger ones, almost always forget it on productivity...

I turned down several job offers that would have been regarded by outside observers as big jumps up. I didn't want to move. I didn't want to uproot my kids. I didn't want a potentially high-risk gig at my age at the time. I didn't want a 60-70 hour work week and constant travel. I didn't want to have to manage and occasionally fire other people. Etc.

At other points in my life, I might have jumped at these opportunities. But life is choices and tradeoffs; make them with your eyes open and own the results.

What a pity.

They will never know the Pleasure and FUN of working with sane, rational, co workers who share comments and jokes and personal stories, and laughter....and on and on.

Glad I’m no longer in the work force.

But still communicate with former collogues.

I was at a small company and experienced the same thing. Worked my ass off (a couple of people said I was the only one who worked!). New management came in, friction started immediately, and I was let go a few weeks later. I learned to bounce back quickly from situations like that.

It’s true, even the best job is never more than one management change or re-org from the whole thing going to crap

I work around 40 hours a week and that is it. However, work has always been about standing out to get promoted and get more pay and that causes people to work longer without pay to stand out.

So this quiet hiring has been around forever.
