Arizona woman Lauren Heike found dead on Phoenix hiking trail; person of interest spotted running

A Phoenix woman was found dead along a hiking trail — and police believe foul play may have been involved and have released a video of a person of interest spotted running near the scene.

Lauren Heike, 29, was found on Saturday at around 10:30 a.m. along the trail on 6500 East Libby Street near her home, nearly 24 hours after she went out, police said.

Phoenix officers originally received a call about an injured person spotted on the trail, but it was confirmed to be Heike’s body, which appeared to have suffered “trauma.”

Phoenix Homicide Lt. James Hester told reporters Wednesday that Heike was likely attacked from behind due to her injuries, and that her body was found in an area that was not easily visible from the hiking trail.

Hester believes that the alleged murder was so terrible, that the killer would have likely stuck out to anyone who came across them on the hiking trail, with police releasing a video of a person spotted near the area where Heike was found.

The short surveillance video appears to be of a man between 5 foot 8 and 6 foot, running on the trail while wearing dark clothing and a backpack.

Police and Heike’s family are calling for anyone with any information on the death or the person of interest to contact law enforcement.

Heike’s mother, Lana, said on Wednesday: “It’s horrific. As hard as this is for us, we’re grateful because we had such a beautiful child.

“We’re grateful because she had such beautiful friends.”

“I know someone knows something and they can help us.

Police are looking for “a man.”

If you see anyone fitting that description call the tip line immediately.

The term is suspect, not Person of Interest. Person of interest has zero legal meaning. Person of Interest was invented for housewives, and it was a term invented for Richard Jewell when they were trying to frame him up. Legally, there is not one speck of difference between Person of Interest and suspect.

And I know it’s retro, but there has never been a time in human history when it’s safe for young attractive females to go walking off in to the wilderness alone, or on hiking trails. That delusion has ended in disaster for so many young girls.

Tragic

“The behavior, in my opinion, was so heinous that I would imagine that the subject would be displaying behavior symptoms that just would look out of place,” Hester said.

I wonder what Homicide Detective Hester means by this. It might be helpful to potential witnesses if he had expressed himself with some detail.

Is he implying that the killer must be psychotic and would be skipping up the road, singing, "I just killed some girl!"?

Person of interest does have a meaning, but it is not an accusation of criminal involvement. He may merely have been a witness to an act of criminality, but he might provide interest to the authorities.

It usually means suspect, but not always.

Unless the person is psychopath, he may fear that he was seen or that people can just tell that he did something, so he’s displaying the behaviour of the fear of getting caught.

No, once you have formed the idea that the person is involved they are a suspect. They might interview him and find out he was frightened by a mountain lion and running for his life. And be able to prove it. In that case he would be downgraded from suspect to witness possibly but guaranteed, if police contact him and start interview him they will read him his rights. That is because they have already formed in their mind that he was involved. There is no difference tween a suspect in a person of interest. Give me the detail if you think otherwise

I understand, which is why I defined person of suspect as a person who may have knowledge, without being involved in the crime itself.

I only said that it often means suspect, but they can’t formally call the person that unless they have proof that they can call him that.

The term itself does not mean suspect. It’s just most of the time the person of interest becomes a suspect, statistically speaking.
