A new test revealed that FDA-approved antibiotics—available at your neighborhood pharmacy—can effectively treat superbugs. They are not prescribed, however, because the gold-standard test predicts they will not work. The new test may improve the way antibiotics are developed, tested and prescribed—and it is openly available to all.
The research has significant implications in the fight against bacterial resistance by optimizing the prescription and use of currently available antibiotics and enhancing the efforts to discover new ones.
Developed by a research team, the antibiotic study addressed a fundamental flaw in the healthcare paradigm for determining antibiotic resistance. It does not account for environmental conditions in the body that impact drug potency.
By simulating conditions in the body, the new test identified several effective antibiotics rejected by standard testing. Further, when the new and standard tests agreed—a nearly perfect prediction of treatment success or failure was observed.
The study required a tour de force screening of more than 500 antibiotic-bacteria combinations. The findings suggest that the standard test is incorrect ~15% of the time. And since physicians rely on this test for treatment decisions—it may lead to prescription of the wrong antibiotic.
"People are not Petri plates—that is why antibiotics fail," said Mahan. "Testing under conditions that mimic the body improves the accuracy by which lab tests predict drug potency."
Physicians are aware of the flaws in the gold-standard test. When recommended antibiotics do not work, they must rely on their experience to decide on the appropriate antibiotic(s) for their patients.
This study provides a potential solution to address the disparity between antibiotics indicated by standard testing and actual patient outcomes.

“They are not prescribed, however, because the gold-standard test predicts they will not work.”
That’s not why. The pills WILL work, that’s why they’re not prescribed. De-population, Baby.
The list of shelf items includes...... 🤔
That's how Jim Hensen, the Muppets guy died.
You can go from a skin poke to organ failure sepsis in 18 hours. Don't mess around for a "antibiotic responsible stewardship protocol" speech. If you have an infection, cure it on the spot. Sitting at home with microbes stewing away inside of you because the CDC wants to "Control" disease, is not in your best interest. Notice CDC says nothing about curing or eradicating diseases. They are all about inventorying them, keeping them on hand for study and distribution to other labs for reasons of nefarious motives, and directing public health policy while at the same time enhancing their lethality. The first thing the CDC does if a new novel disease shows up in BF Egypt is to go collect the puke, blood, feces, tissues, and piss, from the outbreak to bring it to Amerca to play with.
If you can get Trump to tout them, the democrats will outright ban them

And expensive on patent newer antibiotics are on the shelf or soon to be through payoffs to the corrupt FDA. BLOW IT ALL UP AND START OVER.
Bacterial susceptibility to antibiotics is currently assessed in vitro, but the actual efficacy of the drug in vivo may be very different.
Streptomycin worked pretty well when it was tried.
Thank God you had a thinking doctor.
I worked with doctors a lot in my earlier career. Worked with some pretty great doctors, and some run of the mill doctors. They’re all out there. We must be discerning.
I have always said that good doctors are a dime a dozen, but really great doctors are priceless. Sounds like you had one of the really great ones.
And don’t forget the almighty $$$
would be nice to know what they are.
Yup.👍
They are fielding bids right now for OTC drugs 1-10.
After X-Rays he got on the intercom and asked for the janitor to "come to the ER with a pair of Chanel Locks". He asked my daughter if she "would like to help?" Her eyes lit up. She became calm and said "you bet!"
I had some crush and burst fractures in my fingers. He had to yank out my fingernails. The two of them had a blast. I knew he was treating her trauma as much as mine. Good guy. He was always in hot water with the hospital board of directors.
Still have all my fingers. Two still feel like everything I touch is sandpaper, from nerve damage. It took about six months for the ones crushed flat to fill back out.
That’s another great story. So happy you have a keeper of a doctor. They are so hard to find.
My primary care doc is ok, but my ophthalmologist is one of those gems. He wants to retire in the next couple of years. The others that work in his practice are just run of the mill ok.
One of them missed a crucial diagnosis for an eye injury my husband had with an emergency visit. Hubby kept feeling worse and then had unbearable pain. That’s when we asked for the head honcho, the one whose name is on the practice. He discovered what was really wrong, and was able to give my husband relief. I don’t trust my eyes to just anybody.
I wish I could feel that way about my other doctors. I guess I set the bar high, and there are few who rise to that level. Stick with your guy!
would be nice to know what they are.
