All this is happening as the Biden administration oversees historic waves of legal and especially illegal immigration to America.
Biden cited a study showing a shortfall of more than 1.5 million residential units nationwide. This has spiked housing prices and raised rents to the highest levels on record.
Myopic media outlets, blinkered academics and craven politicians don’t connect the dots, but the annual influx of millions of immigrants is clearly inflating the demand in an already overheated market for housing and increasing costs commensurately.
Apologists for the immigration lobby blame zoning laws, local officials and every other conceivable scapegoat. Yet these factors, while significant, do not tell the whole story. Cities such as Houston, Phoenix, Atlanta and Charlotte have lax, even non-existent, zoning regulations but residential costs are surging in those cities, in part because of historically large arrivals of immigrants.
But Democrats in Washington can’t even bring themselves to acknowledge that their mass immigration agenda is worsening a serious housing problem. Sooner or later, economic realities will demand a fair appraisal of the supply-demand imbalance. Meantime, Biden’s tidal wave at the southern border isn’t lifting all boats; it’s helping to swamp the lower-income, working-class Americans he claims to represent.
yup.. deport the illegals and tons of housing opens up.
All part of a master plan........”fundamentally change America” remember?......one of the few times obama actually told the truth and nobody took it seriously.
Yup.
And the influx pushes Americans into states not yet overrun, driving up prices there too.
Meanwhile, Gen Z twirps cry about high prices but angrily demand more immigration! Cuz apparently they’re the most suicidal generation in history.
Liberal Generation Z types , do not see a connection between unfettered illegal immigration and housing costs.
And with liberals in general , it is an article of faith that they must be in favor of illegal immigration. They are incapable of saying that their position on illegal immigration has any negative impacts on society.
ship these invaders back where they came from and there will be a housing surplus. But the elites don’t want anythign that’s good for the people.
Cloward-Piven. ‘nuff said.
Do you really think immigration apologists dislike zoning laws and local government? They have love affairs with any sort of tyranny. Abuse anyone that tells you to ignore anything your eyes can clearly see.
3 years ago when they nearly burned out Oregon, there were no rentals. I had to buy a house to have somewhere to live. I can’t imagine what they are going to do with millions of illegals showing up in sanctuary Oregon.
“Apologists for the immigration lobby blame zoning laws...”
What has happened in California will go nation-wide as far as zoning laws. You can be sure of that happening if Gavin Newsom is ever elected POTUS (2028).
All local zoning laws have been declared null and void in Sacramento, giving the state complete control - first act: any/all lots zoned for single-family homes can now contain up to four units, more if it’s near a “transit zone.”
Each city has been given a mandate as to how much housing it must build (a lot) - including set-asides for “affordable housing.” A few cities are trying to fight this (Huntington Beach and Coronado for two) - but the state attorney (Bonta) and Newsom said they’ll “see them in court” and win.
This is to completely destroy any single-family neighborhoods that are left.
This is what happens in a blue, super-majority state.
