The Chicago Police Department launched an investigation into how officers responded to violence that broke out late Saturday during a large gathering of young people in the city’s downtown tourism district.
The investigation comes after a viral video showed a mob attacking a couple as they exited a Loop store and it follows allegations of police inaction.
As the attack unfolded, police failed to respond to calls for help and even drove past, said Lenora Dennis, who witnessed the beating and helped the couple get to safety.
“It makes me feel scared. It terrifies me that people are either asleep at the wheel or that they’re willfully blind,” Dennis told the Tribune on Wednesday.
The attack Dennis witnessed was one of the violent outbursts that emerged as hundreds of teens and young adults met up downtown. People blocked traffic, jumped onto a CTA bus and attacked passersby during the mayhem, and two teen boys were shot as they stood in the crowd.
The chaos has since sparked national coverage, and video of the attack Dennis saw, first published by the CWB Chicago website, garnered national attention with over 14 millions views on Twitter alone.
But what video didn’t capture, Dennis said, was repeated inaction from nearby police officers as the 20-year-old woman and 22-year-old man from out of state were punched and kicked by over a dozen people.

So here's my question: What action could the police possibly have taken to stop that assault, without progressives accusing the police of engaging in police brutality?
Yep, help get charged, don’t help get charged. Those officers should just say “what call for help? I did not hear one because there was a riot going on.....”
Everyone in The USA has been bombarded with information, data and news for the last 5 years about who's doing what, why and what can or should be done about it.
Chicago is entrapped in it's own mire and if the people of Illinois won't or can't combat it's own destruction, we OTHER states have our own similar battles and can only empathize and pray they (we) come out of this Satanic mess OK.
Coming from the Tribune and Yahoo, this story surprised me.
I figured it would be about an investigation into the over reaction of the police to a mostly peaceful celebration, of something or another by Chicago’s black teens.
This is what the citizens of Chicago want. Criminals run free. If the cops had taken any action, the Chicago prosecutors and Biden’s DOJ would be arresting the police instead of the ‘young people’ perpetuating the crimes. The new Mayor of Chicago has already said the yutes involved shouldn’t be criticized.
Yes a good question! Defund them, call them oppressors, racists etc. what do people expect?
I still hold a majority of police are the good guys yet places (and people) like Chicago paint them all as oppressors.
No one should be a cop in Chicago, NYC, LA, etc. Let the citizens reap what they sow.
Why would the police have intervened? If they had done so, each cop involved would now be on leave and under investigation. Conservatives warned that vilifying all cops for the actions of a few would result in a pull-back of policing and would cause cops to be hesitant about interfering with crime when certain members of society were involved. But, no one listened. Maybe there was not a social worker available to respond to the calls for assistance.
Any cop taking any action against Teenz would be jeopardizing his job and inviting a lawsuit and maybe even injury
There is no reason to care. There is no reason to give a damn.
The problem is in Chicago, not America
The Chicago Police Department launched an investigation
INVESTIGATING OFFICER #1: So, let me see if I understand this. The two of you arrived on the scene. Hundreds of teenagers are running down Michigan Avenue yelling death to cops, death to whiteys, death to whatever. You see cars, buses burning and young people kicking cars as they’re waiting for the light to turn green.
OFFICER #1 BEING INVESTIGATED (30 YEARS ON THE FORCE SIX MONTHS FROM RETIREMENT): Yes.
OFFICER #2 BEING INVESTIGATED (NEW ON THE FORCE): Yes, Sir.
INVESTIGATING OFFICER #1: And right in front of you, a mixed race couple comes out of Nordstrums, and immediately they’re both assaulted by the mob. The woman, who is white, is bludgeoned almost to the point of losing consciousness. And you too sat back and watched?
OFFICERS #1 and #2 (in unison): Yes, sir.
INVESTIGATING OFFICER #1: Why didn’t you step in? Wave your nightstick? Wave your hands? Maybe even shoot a couple rounds in the air?
OFFICER #1: Well, sir, I personally noted that an adult black lady, had stepped in before us, to break up the mob herself, at risk of injury to herself, I thought to myself, why hog all the attention and glory of being a hero? I mean she was doing a great job.
OFFICER #2:Yeah, she was great. Real courage.
INVESTIGATING OFFICER #1: Thank you. I will submit my report to the mayor.
The Supreme Court has ruled that an officer is not required to come to someone’s aid. He can stand there and watch and no lawsuit against the officer will prevail.
In this circumstance the only “safe” thing an officer can do is nothing.
The economy of Chicago relies heavily on trade shows held at the McCormick Center. A sponsor would have to be out of its mind to hold a trade show there, with thousands of attendees possibly exposed to this type of violent behavior. There are lots of other safe, decent, interesting places to hold such shows such as Orange County, Florida, Las Vegas or even Phoenix.
Cop’s don’t like prison just like everyone else.
They can do no right in the current environment.
Who could blame them, I wouldn’t want to get involved either.
It’s Chicago. I just can’t spin up any give-a-dang. Frankly, wall it off, make it a prison (Escape from NY with Snake Pliskin style).
“It makes me feel scared. It terrifies me that people are either asleep at the wheel or that they’re willfully blind.”
The police are not there to help you, especially not in Chicago. They’re there to collect revenue for the City, live through their shift, and stay long enough to get their pensions.
That’s it.
You are in charge of your own self defense. No one else.
L
In order to gain control of the situation cops would likely have had to use force against blacks . Good way to lose the pension .
Why the hell should they risk losing their jobs messing around with those Chicago bozo thugs? They’re not making enough money to get involved in that far left bull crap.
When the Rodney killings started, the fleeing cops drove around that flashpoint blocking the street as the first victims were dragged out of their cars.
Taleeb Starkes summed up this behavior rather well and called it by it’s proper name.(if you are offended by the “n word” you might not want to read his encyclopedia of this behavior)
