A large clinical trial of more than 8,700 patients concluded that the sex of a donor has no effect on the survival of recipients of red blood cell transfusions.
"Some observational studies had suggested female donor blood might be linked with a higher risk of death among recipients compared to male donor blood, but our clinical trial found that isn't the case," said Dr. Dean Fergusson.
The possible impact of the sex of a blood donor on recipient survival has been an unanswered question in transfusion medicine since 2015, when the American National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute identified it as a research priority. Some evidence suggested that sex-related differences such as hormone levels in male and female blood might affect recipient survival, but the results of observational studies have been conflicting.
The team was able to enroll 8,719 participants into their double-blind, randomized trial in just over two years.
Study participants were randomly assigned to receive either male or female donor blood at all visits to The Ottawa Hospital during the study period. A total of 80% of patients received their first transfusion while they were inpatients, and 42% of those received it during surgery.
The study found no statistically significant differences in overall survival between recipients of male donor blood and recipients of female donor blood.

Just now they are verifying this?
They are in the tank for the poofters and lunatics, not for the normal and sane.
Couple years ago, I was told by a phlebotomist at Red Cross that I had “baby blood.” Since I’ve never been exposed to CMV, my blood is used for newborns. I’m A- so I do Power Red donations every four months. I said that they need to tell more people because now that I know, I make sure I donate regularly. Closing in on 14 gallons.
I wondered that too. Blood is a type, not a gender (???)
We’ve been doing human blood to human transfusions since the early 1800s...
Hard to really trust anything coming out of big science nowadys.
Until you find out their weird sex transferred aids to you
Good luck explaining that away
WOW, I was wondering how old blood transfusion was, that’s pretty old! And presumably no blood segregation by sex has occurred in all that time, and we now know this is OK. Clearly if there was some issue it would have appeared ere now. This is really just a weird news story, esp. given the lunacy that has been going on lately.
“Since I’ve never been exposed to CMV, my blood is used for newborns.”
Me too. And my wife. (she is diabetic and does not give blood).
I’m 75, until 8 months ago, I gave blood regularly. I quit when the local hospital forced a young man who worked for me on a house remodel to get the Jab. It is NOT mandatory in Texas, but some hospital idiots forced him to take it if he was going to attend their course. When he was young he had a brain tumor, it has never recurred, but I was livid with them for the risk they subjected him to. They knew his history and demanded it anyway.
I will resume giving blood, but I despise the hospital administrators who did this.
So far, his cancer has not come back.
What about hair color?
Is a transfusion from a brunette more serious than from a blonde?
Will blood from a redhead make you crazy?
Is a bleached blonde worse than a natural blonde?
How many IQ points do you lose with each?
You’d think that if there’d been a problem along those lines it would have been identified a heck of a lot earlier than 2015.
After the chinese virus fiasco, does anyone believe anything the medical community says?
Well, before we knew about blood types, it was dangerous. Some people survived because they happened to get the same type, others survived because they were compatible with more than one type. Some people just died.
But I don’t think blood type has anything to do with sex, or that anyone ever really thought or worried about that.
(I guess the next wasteful study will be about the ‘gender’ of transplant organs...)
Wasn’t there some story in the NY Times not that long ago “Boys & Girls are Different, Science Says” or some inane headline like that.
I suppose that study and news article are locked up with Epstein’s client list!
Boys and girls are very different in lots of ways. But I don’t think those differences extend to blood type; at least as far as we know so far.
I don’t think anyone in need of a transfusion has asked the ‘gender’ of the blood they’ve received, or that the Great God Science has ever been terribly interested in the question, either.
“Some evidence suggested that sex-related differences such as hormone levels in male and female blood might affect recipient survival”
They didn’t find any difference so the issue was moot.
Did they account for the danger of male homosexual donated blood?
