The Last of Us... Portland edition: Armed cops clear out vacant shopping mall turned into open air drug market - in eerie scenes reminiscent of HBO's dystopian drama

Police in Portland spent this past week clearing out a vacant shopping center in the city's deserted downtown in what was described as a scene from the dystopian HBO show The Last of Us.

The building had been turned into an open-air drug market.

Dozens of local police moved in on the vacant retail development Wednesday at around 7:30 a.m. by blocking the surrounding area and stretching out crime scene tape well down the block.

An officer said that while they didn't find squatters, there had been people holing up in there in the days before. Police have been running round-the-clock patrols at the building since last Friday.

The city's Central Bike Squad showed officers using battering rams to break down doors and access locked rooms in the building, which city officials called 'in crisis mode.'

Mayor Ted Wheeler said later that evening: 'The city is confident that the building site is empty of trespassers. There were no immediate threats during this process.'

Building owner Barry Menashe is working with contractors and the police to completely board it up and try to get rid of what The Oregonian called 'rampant drug trafficking.'

The city has been working on a plan to secure the building with Menashe and his daughter Lauren, his real estate company's principal.

Menashe has, in the past, offered to simply let the city use it as a homeless shelter but they've yet to determine an official purpose. Wheeler said that 'would likely require substantial retooling prior to future use.'

Eric Zimmerman, the city's central policy advisor, would rather the property be boarded up than continue to serve as a drug house.

It does not appear that the Mayor or city council want the drug situation to dissolve or go away. This convinces people watching from a thousand miles away....Portland is the place to go...if you want easy access to drugs. If you owned property within 20 miles of the city, your values decrease each quarter.

Just makes one wonder...come 2030....what does Portland look like? Unable to recruit police? Junkie deaths being an hourly thing?

Dystopia isn’t some science fiction nonsense... It’s the here and now.

The nonsense surrounding Covid hysteria and the worldwide response to it, is proof positive that we now live in a dystopian world.

I can honestly say that I was on the covidiot side until March, 202. Then it became all to obvious that the separation and closing of schools and masking and vaccines were not because they were trying to prevent thebspread.

I know the closing of the schools were being done to deny children an education, so they could never catch up. I also knew the closing of small businesses were being done to deny people an economic future.

All this was being done, while better off people had their lives uninterrupted. So, I concluded that the real purpose was to ensure an economic future for them and nothing for us.

The homeless are a protected group in Portland.

A guy my brother knows had his car stolen, he had a tracking device and located the vehicle. He told the cops, they wouldn’t do anything.

He waited till the car moved out of the homeless encampment , he had a couple of friends distract the criminals while he drove it out of there.
Later the homeless criminals showed up at his house wanting “their” car back.

Portland is a craphole city.

Can you provide just 10 names of the “many freepers”?

Didn’t think so.

Then you wouldn’t need a prosecutor, judge or jury....Antifa would fill all roles.

I don’t see this lasting long....reminds me of the committee leadership thing in France, late 1700s.

A street sign proclaiming the new address as “1 Biden Place” seems appropriate. It could compete in the history books with “Hooverville”

Portland. What is odd is that the city reacted and doesn’t make excuses for the bums and druggies.

I live in North Florida. Here the lockdowns were mostly cosmetic and most stores required masks to enter but if you took off the mask inside you were not harassed by the staff though sometimes an insane customer would flip out at you. At the shipyard all were required to wear masks while coming in to work but no one worried if the men took them off to work. And, of course, the governor ended all that pretty early. Down around Yankee Florida the cities got pretty bad but it even faded there after a year of it.
