Jim Nantz pushes back on criticism of Tony Romo

Once the 2022 playoffs arrived, the Tony Romo critics reached a fever pitch. His on-air partner, Jim Nantz, recently pushed back.

“I think there was a little bit of a misinformation attempt there to portray him in a not-so-favorable light,” Nantz said on the SI Media with Jimmy Traina podcast. “It was very disappointing. It really got, to me, more steam after the AFC Championship game, which was our last game. And for the life of me, I didn’t understand it. . . . Where was all this outcry during the season? It’s not like we were invisible.”

He’s right. Every week, they worked a regular-season game that drew a large audience. But there’s something different about those truly standalone games, where everyone watching has no other NFL content to absorb. In the playoffs, that one game that is being played at any given time becomes the focal point of all chatter, on social media and elsewhere.

Nantz made a good point in response to that reality.

“We did a Thanksgiving Day game which was the most-watched game of the year I think in the regular season,” Nantz told Traina. “One or two, anyway. We had the Christmas afternoon game, 100-percent national, gigantic audience. We didn’t do any of these games in January any different than we did during the regular season. So why all of a sudden are people taking cheap shots? I don’t get it.”

Through it all, Nantz strongly disagrees with those who have soured on Romo.

“Tony is the best,” Nantz said. “He’s the absolute best. And he’s also one of my best friends. I love the guy. And when somebody starts questioning our chemistry, there’s an agenda there. There is nothing wrong with our chemistry. I have never had better chemistry with anybody ....

I don’t get it. I think he’s the best announcer on TV and I think he and Nance are great together. I’m amazed how Tony can say what the QB will do next and...it happens. No one knows the game better and remains a joy to listen to.

Frank caliendro does pretty good John Madden! I wonder if he ever tried impersonating Tony Romo? I am not a fan of Romo as he was kinda dry. Though he knows the game.

The broadcast team has access to play calling. They need it to point the cameras.

I think Romo is great in the broadcast booth, but this season, it seemed if his voice was strained.

Romo is the most overpaid commentator in the NFL.

Romo makes some of goofiest and dumb comments I've ever hard a color commentator make.

I don't think he's in a class with Troy Aikman.

My former roommate was drafted in the 1980’s but never played a down in the NFL. We could be watching a game and he call most plays. He said most players at that level can, it’s the athletic execution of the plays (e.g.: making blocks) that make them successful.

Sorry, but nothing better than Dandy Don, Frank and Howard. Pat & John are number two.

I don’t watch nfl any more, and haven’t heard Romo call a game. But I detect an odor of Cowboy Derangement Syndrome in here and on Twitter…

Even if you hate the Cowboys, people have to admit that Tony Romo is perhaps the best game commentator since Madden...................

Jim Nantz is the week point here, not Romo. Keep Romo and get another partner for him. Nantz is an OK golf announcer. Beyond that, yeesh.

I watch very little NFL after being a die hard fan for decades, but I don’t get the Cowboys hatred since they haven’t won a championship in , what, 15 years. I’m too lazy to look it up.
