“Hillsdale and Grove City are two others to send your child to.”

Absolutely! We have great respect for both.

We had Hillsdale as beneficiaries in our Trust for years. Updating it last month I learned their endowment is over $900 MILLION. We made some changes. They don’t need our relatively piddly donation.

It’s funny, but I lived in a brownstone off the Green(?) line somewhere.

My entire street was 99% Hasidic and off-the-charts Republican. The local convenience store had a borderline shrine to Ronald Reagan. I never really branched out into Brookline writ large. I thought it was conservative.

Re: Cambridge. Not surprised. Prime location and always thought it was a weird local for a slum. The fake piousness is the problem.

900 million is peanuts in a trust.

Most trusts for education establishments are in the 10s of billions of dollars.

so I hope you reconsider.

I know that Harvard has over $50 billion, and other Ivy Leagues are close.

We decided to transfer the Hillsdale amount to Grove City. We like the place. Hubby almost took a professorship there and was very impressed. It’s VERY close to home — where I’m from — and we are familiar with the quality of the students they turn out. They probably need it more than Hillsdale.

MIT isn’t at the top of the list because it’s the best school. It’s at the top of the list because it doesn’t have a “gender studies” department.

You'd be wrong on that count, as far as MIT goes: "The full major in Women's & Gender Studies consists of nine courses (including WGS.101, Introduction to Women's & Gender Studies, Advanced Seminar in Women's & Gender Studies: WGS.301J), a pre-thesis tutorial, and a thesis (it is possible to have a two class substitution for the pre-thesis and thesis). Students must file a Major Departure proposal, including a list of intended courses, with the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Science."

My son graduates high school in June and will attend Michigan on a full 4-year Army ROTC scholarship. Very proud of him. He will major in Finance/Business.

He was an all-league linebacker in Massachusetts. But at 6 feet 205 he knows he can’t play for the Wolverines. He is the captain of the rugby team and will definitely play there. He should walk right on to at least the B side.

Glad he got his mom’s brains. She went to Johns Hopkins. I was just a lowly UH-60 pilot for 24 years…

Re: Army ROTC scholarship

Long time since I heard about a full ROTC scholarship.

Your family must be very proud (and financially relieved).

Because STEM has nothing to do with law school.

The scholarships are tough to get. Roughly 10,000 kids apply and they award 3000. But of those only 25% are 4-year scholarships. The rest are 3-year.

He’s saving us a boat-load of money. My brother and I both had 4-year ROTC scholarships back in the late 80s, early 90s. We were in college at the same time and still kid my dad 30 years later about saving him 200 grand.

I have 2 more kids to go too, so hopefully they earn scholarships. My junior wants and Air Force scholarship but they’re the toughest to get. They only give out 500 for the entire country. We’ll see. He’s pretty smart with a good shot at going to MIT.

My third is only 12, so we have some time with him…

The younger brother of one of my friends made a six year commitment to the Air Force in exchange for Air Traffic Control training.

Worked out well for him, but one of these of days, the pilots and the ATCs will all be replaced by Artificial Intelligence.

The newest commercial jets can safely be on auto-pilot for at least 80% of the flight.
