Some seaside restaurants begin to close the first weekend in October. Call ahead and try to go so you hit their last few days they are open. We went the first week of October, had some color but also had some nice meals. We did a coastal tour south to north ending at Bar Harbor.

Eat lobster at least two meals every day. Most importantly, visit a lobster pound and partake of a truly fantastic regional meal

We went to Vermont many years ago and avoided the ‘high season’ for fall colors by going in late September. As it happened the colors turned early and it was quite spectacular. We visited Stowe, Windsor, Burlington, and several other areas, all by B&B. As I recall the Von Trapp lodge was very nice.

You want to spend some time in the lakes region in NH around Laconia (I would recommend Funspot if you are into gaming and probably pop over to Mount Washington. The seacoast is fantastic. you want to schedule a ride up 1A and a stop in Ogonquit for some shore hiking. BTW there is a candy store in York that is the size of a grocery store and has every candy known to man. The dessert of Maine, The Woodman Museum in Dover and a meal at the Tuckaway Tavern in Raymond.

See the lighthouses along the Maine coastline. My favorite is Pemaquid Point. See Mount Washington. Ride the cog railway. Tour the Mount Washington Hotel, but don’t stay there. Too expensive. Stay at the Inn at Thorn Hill in Jackson, New Hampshire. The less advertised Jackson, New Hampshire is more enjoyable than the overrated Stowe, Vermont.

Some years ago, I visited my nephew and his wife who were living in NH between Concord and Manchester and took a day trip with them to Portsmouth. I really enjoyed the Strawberry Banke Museum.

The downtown area of Portsmouth was really quaint with lots of cool small shops and restaurants.

Early, Mid, Late Autumn? Leaf peeping? Mt. biking? Vt. has more beautiful farmland and open views IMHO than either NH or ME, but it's full of commies. Wolfboro is worth a visit in the summer/early autumn especially if you're into going on a lake plane ride. Winnepasaukee is huge. The Lake Sunapee region has plenty of quaint N.E. type towns. Or you could head to the White Mts and hike or drive up Mt. Washington, but realize that the weather at the top is unpredictable. It can be 70 and sunny one hour and a raging blizzard the next. Covered bridge territory along the way.

Maine has its charms, but inland? Unless it's a hunting trip, bee line it to the coast. Avoid Portland and Lewiston. Boothbay and Camden and Bar Harbor north of here are worth seeing. Lighthouse at Pemaquid has cool rocks to walk around on. Actually most of Maine has rocks to scramble around on by the waves. Pemaquid does have an actual beach a few miles from the lighthouse however. You can bike the carriage trails at Arcadia, but I wouldn't plan a bicycle trip in Maine. The guided boat tour/whale watch cruises are worthwhile. The pumpkin regatta in Damariscotta is a hoot, but that's late autumn, and that's where the world's best oysters are. The rest of Maine is lobster/seafood heaven.

Maine coast is great some nice resort towns and the Green Mountains of Vermont is the most peaceful place I’ve been.

Near Camden, just a little ways due north, you’ll find the Mt. Battie tower. If you have a clear day, the views from up there are spectacular. You can see many miles up and down the coast, and islands. Take binocs if you have them.

Camden Hills State Park
Renowned for the panoramic view of Camden Harbor and Penobscot Bay from the top of Mt. Battie, which inspired Edna St. Vincent Millay’s poem “Renascence,” the park still inspires wonder in visitors today.

The tower is a bit of a climb, but worth it. The tower was built to commemorate those who fought in WWI.

Also, Lubec a bit of a drive but a cute little coastal town. Lunch at the fisherman’s wharf is great just for the view. You can also cross over the border to Campabello Island if you’re so inclined.
