New Yorker magazine, which won't allow FR to excerpt any of its' material, has an article up today which gives an plausible explanation why it gets things so absurdly and dangerously wrong at times. Title is ChatGPT Is a Blurry JPEG of the Web. Go read it.

I know of two instances where ChatGPT has falsely stated that innocent individuals were convicted felons.

I’m doing some product development and ChatGPT has been great for chemistry questions. But for anything like Global Warming it is a complete cluster.

It’s coming to its own conclusions, basically. However, like somebody strongly Aspergic, the conclusions they come to is based on the data input. They can be very wrong, but that’s because their data points is incorrect.

Thank you for that incredibly interesting article. I enjoy it immensely and it helped me comprehend the limitations of ai. Well written as usual

Truth tables are an absolute thing, trying to pervert the logic of a computer based upon binary logic results in some pretty whacky outputs.

Actually it is attempting to fill in missing data and it is unable.

That’s how Aspergers are. The more Aspergrish somebody is, the less able they are to be able to fill in blanks and the more reliant they arecat relying upon the data they have.

I read it. Not political at all, but logical and explained well. Ted Chaing did a good job writing about the issue.

If I recall correctly the learning cycle data input for ChatGPT ended sometime last year. I could be wrong about that.
I’ve used ChatGPT to structure fairly complicated contracts and it’s as good as any lawyer. I see AI as a real threat to businesses like accountants and lawyers.

I used to use Excel a lot to analyze stock options movements (still do to a lesser degree). I asked ChatGPT to write some long VBA routines and string together some Excel formulas that I used in some of my spreadsheets and it instantly produced what it took me weeks to develop.
That said, asking the right questions is required and that still took a lot of care and attention to detail on my part.
Bottom line, though...ChatGPT is going to immediately eliminate a lot of programming jobs.
