My son (mid-twenties) said the demographic makeup of his computer science courses were like mine (mid-fifties). Over half were white males, 2nd place were Asian males, 3rd place were Asian females, a couple of black males, one white female, no black females and no Hispanics of either sex.

And of the ones who talked about programming as a hobby since before they were old enough to drive, 100% of them were white males.

“no black females “

I was a math major, I don’t recall every having a black female in any of my classes. Now it may be because I wasn’t looking (didn’t care).

And working over 30 years as an Engineer supporting DoD I only recall working with 5 black female engineers. However, black female logisticians were almost a majority.

I built my first Heathkit H-8 computer in 1980. A few months before my oldest son was born. All 3 sons had their paws on good computers from an early age. My youngest managed to drop out from high school. He happily writes first person graphical game code. My middle son earned degrees in Business Admin and Physics. Coding is not his thing, but he is exceptionally skilled in math and physics. He earns a living principally as a real estate broker. My oldest passed at age 32. He was studying geology in support of his interest in paleontology.

I amused my kids in the mid-80s by modifying an early version of "Doom" to have fuzzy pink bunnies as the adversaries. They enjoyed the multi-player, networked versions over our coax based Ethernet in the house. Seems primitive by today's standards.
