OVATION TO GEN. BUTLER: Immense Meeting of the Citizens of New-York at the Academy of Music; THE NEUTRALITY OF ENGLAND SHOWN UP (4/3/1863)

An immense gathering of the citizens of New-York was held last evening at the Academy of Music, under the auspices of the Loyal League and the hundred gentlemen who, some time since, tendered to Gen. BUTLER the compliment of a public dinner, to extend to him in this form, as most agreeable to him, a welcome to the City, and to testify their appreciation and approbation of the distinguished services he has rendered the country during the present war. The Academy was crowded to its utmost capacity. The boxes, dress circle and balcony fairly blazed with the beauty and fashion of the City, while the deep aisles of the parquet and the more remote recesses of the amphitheatre were relieved from the sombre colors of male attire by the waving plumes, the ruddy ribbons, and the glittering jewels of New-York's fairest ladies. Mrs. BUTLER, Mrs. BANKS and Mrs. FREMONT were present, sitting in the private boxes, and upon the stage were Gen. WOOL, Gen. C.M. CLAY, and a large number of our well-known citizens.

Previous to the opening of the meeting, Maj.-Gen. WOOL, and several officers of his staff, entered upon the stage. His appearance was greeted with tremendous cheers. Gen. WETMOKE came forward and said:

"I am happy to see that this immense audience recognizes one of our noblest heroes, Maj.-Gen. WOOL. [Cheers.]

The applause having subsided, Gen. WOOL advanced to the footlights and said:

SPEECH OF GEN. WOOL.

I thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for the honor of this recognition. I am not prepared to make a speech on this occasion. You will have those who can speak to you better than I can do. But permit me to say What you already know -- I am for putting down this rebellion,
