Paris votes to ban rental e-scooters

People in Paris have voted to ban rental electric scooters in their city, dealing a blow to scooter operators and a triumph for road safety campaigners.

Almost 90% of votes cast on Sunday favoured a ban the battery-powered devices, official results showed.

The referendum was called in response to a rising number of people being injured and killed on e-scooters in the French capital.

Paris was one of the first cities to adopt e-scooters.

Critics argue they were causing more harm than good. There was growing concern with the way some people were driving the scooters - weaving through traffic, dodging pedestrians on pavements, and getting up to speeds of 17mph (27km/h).

Riders often did not wear helmets and children as young as 12 could legally hire the e-scooters.

There was also criticism that groups of parked e-scooters were cluttering pavements.

They need to get rid of them in Reno as well. People dump them everywhere on the streets, on the sidewalks, at intersections. They are an eyesore and a clear safety issue.

San Antonio’s river walk is a prime dumping ground for them. People get drunk and toss them into the canals.

weaving through traffic, dodging pedestrians on pavements, and getting up to speeds of 17mph (27km/h).

You'd think that in France, surrendering the right of way would be second nature.

That happened a lot in downtown St.Paul and the Mississippi River. Things were a menace and a hazard to pedestrians.

“San Antonio’s river walk is a prime dumping ground for them. People get drunk and toss them into the canals.”

Well, that is an effective way to get rid of them.

They just plain steal them in our city. And the da city keeps replacing them. Stupid is as stupid does.

“Things were a menace and a hazard to pedestrians.”

As I recall a few years ago these things were the “next big thing” in urban transport. Too lazy tonight to go bring up all the old glowing news reports.
I suspect we will see some other things go by the wayside in the next months and years.

not to mention the fires happening wherever they are worldwide:

21 March 2023: Evening Standard UK: London firefighters called out to over 150 e-bike and e-scooter battery blazes in just over a year
Figures obtained by the Standard reveal that the LFB was called to 116 fires involving the vehicles last year
by Sami Quadri
The fires are caused by the vehicles’ lithium-ion batteries overheating and catching fire...

not to mention the danger silent, or near silent, electric mobility scooters, e-scooters, EVs present to the vision-impaired, (where’s the progressive left on that one, or any of the above?)

Wasn’t the Segway that started this trend?

We loved them in our party-town. We walk to town frequently, but we’d ride all over the place on special trails with the e-scooters and bikes. Loads of fun. Then they started to regulate them out of existence and we rarely see them available now.

It was mostly due to drunk tourists abusing the privilege. Many times I witnessed them making bonsai runs through traffic and on the sidewalks in town. They ruined it for the locals.

Sad…

Dallas had a lot of problems with scooters and banned them back in 2020. Last I heard there were some people on the city council working on new rules and regulations that will bring them back.

I was just in San Antonio and used the scooters extensively. I had injured my foot and had to do a several day trade show.

I really like the concept and the availability.

Better yet is the free market application. As FReepers, we should champion that rather than looking for government to ban them.

If they make the owners money, they will stay around. If enough idiots destroy that, it’s too bad.
