Armed store manager turns tables on would-be robber and opens fire: police

A Chicago auto parts store manager shot and killed a would-be robber Saturday after the suspect flashed a gun, according to police.

A man between 30 and 40 years old reportedly entered an O'Reilly Auto Parts store in Calumet Heights, took out a firearm and demanded money from the register, police said.

The store manager, whose name has not yet been disclosed, pulled out his own firearm and fired shots at the robber. Police said the manager is a valid FOID cardholder.

The would-be robber was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries, police said.

Multiple bullet holes riddled the vestibule, along with shattered glass out front of the building. A gun was also seen near the entrance to the shop. Detectives were later seen taking photos out front of the auto parts store.

Police have not yet publicly identified the deceased man.

The incident comes as many Chicago residents have become concealed carry holders.

A Fox News Digital analysis based on local media reports going back to 2020 found at least 44 incidents where individuals with a gun – who had concealed carry permits or an FOID, an Illinois identification card used for gun possession and purchase – have thwarted an attack or other crime.

“ Police said the manager is a valid FOID cardholder.”

Did the police say the robber was a valid FOID cardholder?

“ ...FOID, an Illinois identification card used for gun possession and purchase...”

You need a license to use the second amendment right in Illinois.

No mention of race. Both white or both black?

Gun owners themselves are functionally registered in the Land of Lenin.

I wonder how many people have moved to Illinois and brought stuff with them in the move including whatever miscellaneous firearms, shoved them in a closet, and forgot about them......having no clue they are required to get a FOID card and years later find out in an unpleasant encounter with whoever they’ve been “illegal” all this time?

No arrest reported either.

Odds are both victim and perpetrator are black.

When police can’t protect people and businesses, you have to expect vigilante justice will start happening.

Just saying if you don’t like people killing criminals, then you need to beef up the police.

Also, those that need to use deadly force, need to understand when they legally can and can’t use deadly force.

With all the glass, someone should call his mom. Tell her her baby caused a mess, and she can darn well get down there and clean it up.

A couple of weeks ago I received a new card in the mail from the Illinois State Police, they have redesigned the card to indicate that I am a CCH as well as a gun owner.

They did not mention in the article if the perp was legal. I think not.
All the comments I read were positive, on the 2A side.

“I wonder how many people have moved to Illinois“

Only those who lost a bet. Nobody voluntarily moves TO Illinois.

“The would-be robber...”

No, he WAS a robber, not a “would-be.” A “would-be” would have stayed at home contemplating whether he should go rob a store.

No no no - get it right.

He is always described as a “would be robber” or (”victim” !!) or it’s a “botched robbery” or “robbery gone bad”.

Self defense is not “vigilante justice.”

We can’t have an opinion without knowing the race of the suspect.

Self defense is not “vigilante justice.”

Self defense is a legal concept. Therefore, it is based on technicalities and past legal decisions. Furthermore, it is not hard and fast. A determination of two exact situations before two different juries can result in one being found to be self defense and the other not self defense.

The training I have had basically says that anytime one pulls a concealed carry pistol out of concealment you better be sure your life or the life of someone else is in danger and you are willing to go to jail, if you have misjudged the situation. The point being that you can never predict what an investigating cop is going to do, nor a DA, nor a judge, nor a jury.

The person charging the man with murder has to believe on some level that it was not self defense, otherwise they would not charge him with murder. If it was murder, and he doesn’t win in front of a jury, then what he did was vigilante justice.

If society does not want to protect its citizens, I have no problem with vigilante justice. I just prefer to let the police and justice system to efficiently protect the public.

You describe the legal nuances between self defense and homicide.
None of that has anything to do with vigilante justice.

Apples and gorillas.
