A New York man was sentenced Friday to 22 years in prison for the fatal beating of a 61-year-old Chinese immigrant who was collecting cans for money.
Jarrod Powell, 51, pleaded guilty in January to manslaughter as a hate crime in the 2021 death of Yao Pan Ma, part of a wave of crimes targeting people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in New York and around the country.
Ma, who came to the United States with his wife in 2018, was attacked from behind as he was collecting cans in East Harlem on April 23, 2021. He was knocked to the ground, kicked, stomped on and left unconscious, authorities said.
Ma suffered a traumatic brain injury and died in a hospital eight months later without ever regaining consciousness.
Powell was arrested four days after the assault. He acknowledged in his plea agreement that he had targeted Ma because the victim was Asian, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office.
Bragg called Ma's death “the result of a despicable racially motivated attack.”
The victim's family "endured an agonizing eight months in the hospital while the devoted husband and father of two remained in a vegetative state, before succumbing to his injuries on December 31, 2021,” Bragg said in a statement.

That's shocking Bragg would say that. I'm surprised that filthy POS Bragg didn't say "That asian guy deserved it."
He only got 22 years because he was black.
Yes, or taken out back and shot.
Animal.

I’m actually surprised they called this a hate crime.
I wonder what the sentence would have been had the victim been a white, conservative heterosexual male.
Bragg has already said no life without parole sentences with the exception (maybe) of serial killers and murderers of first responders. I believe the policy is a 25 year maximum with parole possible.
Have the feds showed up charge him with civil rights violations?
Hmmmmmmm.....
If blacks commit homicide at a rate between 7x and 8.2x that of white homicide perpetration and some large multiple of that for the ratio to Asian homicide perpetration, may we say that he only committed the crime because he was black?
This was illegal in Bragg’s New York?
All Propaganda via Yahooze...
It a ‘news’ piece to show Al Brag as unbiased and tough on crime; furthermore, that getting tough on the Donald is simply what Al does to all criminals that have to “prove their innocense” (as piglosi said).
I suppose it’s unanswerable but it’s unclear to me what is this Black hatred of Asians is all about. Perhaps it’s the success and self-sufficiency of a non-white minority making them look bad. Institutional envy as a cultural pillar is a bad look.
This is very sad. Mr Ma had been in the US for only a couple of years when he died.
The unmitigated disaster who killed him already had been convicted of 33 crimes, very many of which were violent assaults.
I wonder what the sentence would have been with the same facts but white on black?
Blacks tend to value size and strength more. It could be hard to accept smaller individuals succeeding while they don’t.
Why do blacks beat up and kill Asians? Sadistic cowardice? vicious cruelty? Mad-dog meanness? All the above!
Beat a man to death for no reason and only get 22 years in prison.
Its like some people, regardless of race, just can’t seem to rise above their animal instincts. Unfortunately, it seems like this applies to the black race in a higher proportion.
The Japanenese were incredibly cruel in their old society. Given a different situation, they may revert. Many German engineers are arrogant asshats.
In a breakdown of law and order and in the disintegration of my once beautiful Republic, I may very well become much more animalistic to defend my loved ones. But that is a different motivator....I think?
But more to your point....Asians used to represent competition to the blacks for jobs and housing I have heard. Maybe that has carried through to this day? But it seems many blacks seem to hate EVERYONE and want to follow leaders that encourage victimized mentality. I wish more of them would follow leaders that elevate them to higher goals. It seemed to be working with Trump approach, if polls were to be believed. Just my thoughts..
