Yeah, that Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence theme, while not known well in the US, is ubiquitous in Japan. The movie was excellent too.

An especially grim crash too...the plane lost part of its tail and slowly lost altitude. Those aboard the plane had time to write farewell notes to their loved ones.

Kyu Sakamoto was killed in the 1985 crash of the big JAL airliner. Over 500 dead. Largest single-aircraft accident.

He did great stuff. I particularly liked his collaboration with David Sylvian.

Was he Miss Sakamoto’s father?
“Good heavens, Miss Sakamoto, you’re beautiful!”

Thanks for this. I would have never seen this news otherwise.
One of my first girlfriends loved his albums “Neo Geo” and “Beauty.” Thus I listened to both often.
wonderful memories.

Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Byrne (of the Talking Heads) together wrote the soundtrack for the absolutely fantastic 1987 movie “The Last Emperor”

"Sakamoto, who began spending most of his time in New York in the early 1990s, went public with his throat cancer diagnosis in 2014 and his rectal cancer diagnosis in 2021. Cancer later spread to his lungs, requiring him to undergo surgeries in October and December 2021."
