NEWS FROM THE MISSISSIPPI: The Failure of the Sunflower Expedition; Obstructions Encountered in Rolling Fork (4/2/1863)

NEAR VICKSBURGH, Miss., Friday, March 20, 1863.

Events of grave importance have occurred in this Department during the week past. I have already informed you of the expedition of Admiral PORTER toward Yazoo City, via the bayous which connect with Deer Creek and Sunflower River, undertaken a week ago, and of its probable success. At last accounts he was within a short distance of Deer Creek, which he had approached through a series of bayous now rendered navigable by the swollen condition of the streams. It was believed that the gunboats would reach Yazoo City two days ago. Lying there are known to be a large fleet of rebel transports, and one or more unfinished iron-clads. Gens. GRANT and SHERMAN, with a large body of troops, departed for that part of the country three days ago. They would pass up the Mississippi several miles, where they would disembark, and march overland to Yazoo City. The Engineer brigade of Gen. BISSELL, are already there, having come down from Lake Providence, and are understood to be constructing a road for the passage of the troops. The high stage of the water will materially interfere with the marching of the troops. Important consequences depend upon the successful termination of the expedition, as it will give us control of the approaches to Vicksburgh, and may involve the possession by our troops of the railroad running eastward from Vicksburgh to Jackson, Montgomery, Savannah and Richmond.

The cut-off at Lake Providence, through Bayou Macon into the Red River, is a success. I saw one of the officers of a gunboat who had just returned from that expedition three days ago. A large number of plantations had been entirely flooded by opening this cut-off, and a stern-wheel steamer had been launched on the lake.

Obstructions encountered in Rolling Fork...

Didn’t Joe Biden call that Rolling Stone?

I didn’t get the reference at first. I just saw a clip on Twitter in which he literally calls Rolling Fork Rolling Stone. Incredible. He finished with, “I got my mind going here.” Just barely, dude.
