Saturn's rings are heating its atmosphere, according to a new study.
Scientists announced the finding on March 30, which they say has never been seen before in our solar system.
A NASA spokesperson said: "The secret has been hiding in plain view for 40 years. But it took the insight of a veteran astronomer to pull it all together within a year, using observations of Saturn from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and retired Cassini probe, in addition to the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft and the retired International Ultraviolet Explorer mission.
"The discovery: Saturn's vast ring system is heating the giant planet's upper atmosphere. The phenomenon has never before been seen in the solar system. It's an unexpected interaction between Saturn and its rings that potentially could provide a tool for predicting if planets around other stars have glorious Saturn-like ring systems, too."

Kubricks Masterpiece!
The problem with this is it’s going to make Uranus explode.
That’s what they’re not telling us!!!
Shit. You beat me to the Uranus joke.
You too. I’m never coming to another space post again!
Or it 'could' have nothing to do with it at all. I just love scientific fiction writers.
Just seeing if I got a response. :)
The Earth has similar warming due to solar radiation hitting its magnetic field. It is what causes the global warming people think is from CO2 heat retention.
Where is Dr. Saint Greta. She’s the mentally retarded expert with a fake PhD that can explain what is happening.
“The Earth has similar warming due to solar radiation hitting its magnetic field. It is what causes the global warming people think is from CO2 heat retention.”
These are parallel with my thoughts. It’s the reason why I posted comment #1 about the external influence.
It’s a big wonderful scientific puzzle to figure out.
Saturn's rings are nowhere near 4 billion years old.
Additionally, that extra heat does not simply build up indefinitely. It is eventually re-radiated - though the affected area will remain a few degrees higher in temperature than the unaffected areas.
Of course, I give no credence to the explanation proffered by Arthur C. Clarke, concerning an "industrial accident" involving Saturn's moon Japetus.
Regards,
“I heard there are rings around Uranus. So I guess Uranus must also be getting hot.”
Nothing’s worse than a hot anus!
